Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Danny Cartwright and Spencer Craig never should have met. One evening, Danny, an East End cockney who works as a garage mechanic, takes his fiancee up to the West End to celebrate their engagement. He crosses the path of Spencer Craig, a West End barrister posed to be the youngest Queen’s Counsel of his generation.

A few hours later Danny is arrested for murder and later is sentenced to twenty-two years in prison, thanks to irrefutable testimony from Spencer, the prosecution's main witness.
Danny spends the next few years in a high-security prison while Spencer Craig’s career as a lawyer goes straight up. All the while Danny plans to escape and wreak his revenge.
Thus begins Jeffrey Archer’s poignant novel of deception, hatred and vengeance, in which only one of them can finally triumph while the other will spend the rest of his days in jail. But which one will triumph? This suspenseful novel takes the listener through so many twists and turns that no one will guess the ending, even the most ardent of Archer’s many, many fans.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read recently   July 22, 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it compelling and I did not want to put it down. I think the author did a great job weaving an intricate story. I love to have someone to root for and I got that in Danny Cartwright. I found myself thinking about this book many times as if the events were actually occurring in real life. I liked the fast pace of the book too.

There were definitely a few things that didn't seem realistic to me but I was willing to suspend reality a bit for a good story. Probably the biggest problem for me was to have a completely illiterate man become not only proficient in his academic abilities over a very short time but excel beyond all others in his college courses or leap from not being able to read at all to reading Bleak House and the like.

Absolutely worth your time to read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!   July 7, 2008
The Audio CD is wonderful! The narrator does an excellent job of making the incredibly fast-paced story come alive. If the rest of Jeffrey Archer's books are like this, I've got my summer reading lined up. Very clever!

5 out of 5 stars highly entertaining!!!   July 6, 2008
wonderful summer read! This is the first Jeffrey Arthur novel I have read, but am on my way to the library to pick up a few more. If you enjoy mystery, suspense and legal thrillers, give this one a try. I doubt you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A must read!!   July 6, 2008
This is the best of everything Archer has written. WEll done all the way through!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very good- Recommended   July 5, 2008
This is a very enjoyable novel. I don't want to repeat everything everyone below said but I thought I would mention if you enjoyed this retake of The Count Monte Cristo I would also recommend Crux by Richard Aellen. I read it several years ago and I thought it was a fantastic novel. It's set during the Vietnam War. I highly recommend it.
