--A well done book and a good way to prepare children for school-- July 22, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
OFF TO FIRST GRADE shares the anticipation of over 20 children as they start, toward that very scary experience, of going off to school. The children and adults are all portrayed as different animals. Cats, dogs, lions, bunnies, wolves a zebra, and a mouse. I think children will enjoy the diversity of the individual characters and how they each begin the first day of school. The author, Louise Borden did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life and I think most children will find a particular character to identify with. This is a good way to prepare your child for the first grade.
Some of the new students are: Dee, a brown puppy who will be riding in yellow school bus number 5. Ignacio, a lion, is new to America and looking forward to learning English. Nina, a gray puppy, is walked to school by her grandfather who tells her about his first day in school, sixty years ago. Otto a pug, who usually wears hand me downs is treated to a brand new pair of red sneakers by his sweet grandmother. Several children open their lunch boxes as they walk to school for a little peek inside. Whit, a tan mouse, wonders about his new teacher and if he can find his desk.
The school officials are Xavier, a big dog, who drives Bus 3. When he meets the students he tells them he has "X-ray vision and can see monkey business before it even happens. "Mrs. Miller, is an orange cat, and the first grade teacher. She's ready for school and has made many plans for her class. Mr. Zimmerman, a bull dog is also the principal. He likes his job and the students. In fact, he plans to read a story to them for their very first day at school.
The delightful illustrations are by Joan Rankin!
Great Book! July 21, 2008 What a charming, pleasant book to read to your child getting ready for first grade. All the characters in this book, with names beginning from A to Z, are getting ready for that big day. Each one talks about a different aspect of getting ready. Getting dressed, taking pictures, riding the bus, where the classroom is, what the teacher is like and many more. There are so many things that fill little heads at this big moment. This book will give children an opportunity to talk about things they may have thought about but not discussed.
From Anna who has the first day of school marked on her calendar and who is looking forward to reading zillions of books, to Mr. Zimmerman, the principal who says "I'm the luckiest person in the world. I talk with parents. I read books to kids. I play football with the students at recess", all the characters are delightful.
I love the artwork. The pastel colors are just beautiful and so peaceful. I highly recommend this book to parents of children starting school. Grammas might like to have a copy too!
SCHOOL DAZE July 7, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
If a youngster is feeling trepidation about taking the big step from kindergarten into first grade, here is a cheerfully imagined chronicle of the thoughts and words of 23 students who will be in Mrs. Miller's class at Elm school.
Youngsters are mentioned alphabetically, so we begin with Anna who tells her little brother, Ray that she will bring home a lot of books to read to him. Dee waits for the big yellow bus and hugs his mom good-bye.
Ignacio is not only going to a new school but he's also in a new country. Although he met his teacher and the principal last week he still holds tight to his papa's hand as he practices his English.
Ramon's fifth grade sister puts a blue dot on his right hand so he will remember to turn right not left at the end of Elm school's long hall.
Positive traits are emphasized in the brief experience of each new first grader - from helpfulness, to reassurance to friendship.
