The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.

The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner

Nothing I have ever bought on Amazon has compelled me to write a review like this book. I have tried all diets. I have many many exercise videos. I have tried eating small healthy portions plus working out two times a day morning and evening and I never lost more than 1 pound in a month. Sometimes I even ended up gaining. I did the South Beach diet for two weeks and it was very difficult because I am a pasta/bread lover! Needless to say, it was very difficult and I had horrific cravings. But trust me, it gets easier as the days go by. I could now be on Phase 2 but I read somewhere that if you feel comfortable staying on Phase 1 for another week you should to really rid yourself of the cravings and I have. There is a lot of temptation around me all the time but I have not faltered yet. I lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks of the diet. That has moved me to start exercising and continue eating healthy so I recommend it to those that have tried everything...this might be the weight loss method for you too.

I finally bit the bullett and decided to do something about my weight. I never had gotten really serious before. Although I had a baby and really hated myself. I got the book and lost 15 lbs in the 1st 2 weeks. I didn't cheat. I went on to do phase 1 for 4 weeks (although I didn't lose much for the weeks 3, and 4) Once I added the good carbs back in my diet (not that often) I began to see more weight just melt away. I lost 35 lbs in 10 weeks. I hope this helps someone who really is just determined to lose some weight. Lord knows it helped me!

This diet is dangerous. It works because you are BURNING out your ADRENALS. You will fry your hormones with this diet.
For you low carbers- haven't you noticed that whenever you low carb diet, you get headaches and insomnia???? This is called a CLUE.
Do NOT do this diet, or you will pay the piper with your HEALTH.
Exercise and having a PROPER diet with proper REST is the ONLY way to diet.
After having completed this expensive diet, you WILL gain the weight back, and then some.
