Product Description Every month, over 200,000 GPS units are sold to recreational users in the U.S. Learning to use a GPS is fairly straightforward; choosing which software to use is not. GPS Mapping Make Your Own Maps guides readers through the challenging choices they face and shows them how to combine the fun of high-tech with the security of paper maps. Covering all major brands of mapping software, it also explores sources of free software and maps, how to use aerial photos and satellite imagery, and how to view backcountry locations in 3-D. GPS Mapping reduces a readers learning curve and gets them mapping right away.

GPS Mapping July 16, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Over the past few years GPS technology has not only improved rapidly but is also becoming increasingly affordable. Today inexpensive handheld GPS are so easy to use that virtually anyone can use the device without any sort of training or instruction. These aspects have made such technology useful not only for use by the professional but also by the average person.
Unfortunately, mapping software and downloadable maps have not really kept up with rapidly advancing GPS technology. It is hard enough to find good software or maps of the area you want but usually once you've found these resources they are horribly expensive and difficult to actually use. More often that not, once you've purchased these resources you realize that the maps don't completely cover the area you want or that the software isn't compatible with your GPS system or existing software.
GPS Mapping: Make Your Own Maps takes the frustration out of this process. The author outlines some good software options and downloadable mapping solutions. He details the price, compatibility issues, pros and cons of the product, and instructions for use saving the reader precious time, energy, and money.
Good for those looking January 3, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book does offer a wealth of information about a number of the most popular software titles for GPS mapping. It would be particularly useful for those who haven't already chosen the software they want to use as these tutorials will allow a reader to get the feel of the software before making a choice. There are a few very good pieces of mapping software that aren't covered in the book, however. Still, it is worth the price just to compare.
Not impressed June 23, 2006 23 out of 25 found this review helpful
This book is entitled "GPS Mapping, Make your own maps" I see little in the book that tells you in any kind of clear or concise way how to do that. The book is little more than a review of various mapping softwares, which can easily be found just searching the internet.
Covers all of the major brands of mapping software November 10, 2005 13 out of 23 found this review helpful
Every month more than 200,000 GPS units are sold to the general public and while learning to use a GPS is quite easy, choosing which software to use can be quite complicated and confusing. Very highly recommended, GPS Mapping: Make Your Own Maps by conservationist and outdoorsman Rich Owings informatively guides readers through all the diverse choices they face and explains just how to combine the fun of high-tech with the security of paper maps for their outdoors, wilderness, and travel activities. GPS Mapping covers all of the major brands of mapping software (including sources of free software and maps), and explains how to use aerial photos, satellite imagery, and viewing backcountry locations in 3-D. Thoroughly "user friendly", GPS Mapping significantly expedites the learning curve and will speed the outdoor recreation enthusiasts into a rapid expertise in the use of their GPS units.
