Fantastic! October 23, 2008 I have studied many languages using many different methods. This method is by far the best I have ever used. I am amazed at how much I've learned in such a short time. I can put together complex sentences in French after less than a week of study. This method won't make you fluent or give you much vocabulary, but what it does do is give you a fantastic foundation of the grammar. It does that in a painless way without you even realizing it. That doesn't mean it's easy, but if you listen to the lessons and hit the pause button anytime he asks you to say something, you will be amazed at how fast you start to understand how the language works.
I also highly recommend "Assimil New French With Ease" but I would do Michel Thomas Beginner and Advanced first.
Unexpected yet delightful surprise October 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Three months ago I was in Sydney's top foreign language book shop asking for their most successful language programmes (as part of a research study I am doing on best practice learning methods). The very knowledgeable and helpful shop assistant spent over 2 hours with me and I left with a list of about a dozen programmes/books across several languages. This product was on that list.
I have never studied a foreign language and certainly had no intention of learning French. However, once I had listened to a few minutes of the first cd, I was instantly hooked and very excited about this method. The key point for me was that this programme fuelled an excitement in learning that I have not had since university - and I think that is what Mr Thomas is seeking to establish. Much has already been written about the pros and cons of the programme in previous reviews. Yes, he has a strong Polish accent. Yes, it took me longer than 8 hours to master several thousand words (three months - mind you, I have been learning to write French in parallel). But what a blast it is to have so much French at my finger tips after such a short time!
All in all, the programme is cleverly designed, challenging enough to be stimulating and easy to listen to again and again. I use the two review discs included in the package regularly as I press forward with the Advanced French Programme and my recently acquired grammar books.
In summary, great value for money and an exciting learning booster.
Speaking in minutes! August 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've never taken a lick of French in my life, but wanted to learn some when I found out my brother would be going to Senegal for 6 months as an exchange student I wanted to learn some of the language he would be speaking for half a year.
I was absolutely astonished at how quickly I was able to start speaking full sentences in French. Granted, I spoke carefully and deliberately, but I was definitely speaking and really understanding French. My brother, who has studied the language for 6 years in high school and college, was amazed at the pace I was picking it up. Michel's method really is that effective. It's amazing. While the vocabulary you get is somewhat limited, you make up for it by learning the structure of the language and how it operates, which you can fill in with vocab later.
I had to take off one star for two reasons. (1) The female student was really annoying. She was struggling to get it, and when she actually said something correctly her reactions were weird. Not a big deal, but when you're listening for 10 hours... (2) Biggest weakness of this course is that it does not help develop your ear. I found that while I could speak some complex sentences, I still had a very hard time understanding spoken French. I recommend Pimsleur to fill this gap.
Overall, amazing product.
Does what it promises to do July 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This product lives up to its title - you will be speaking French by the time you finish listening to the CDs. And listening has never come so easily (outside a real classroom, at least). The recording features Michel Thomas working with two students - one with a little more experience in French than the other - but neither with much more than yourself. While listening, you not only pick up the information imparted by Michel Thomas, but you also have a chance to learn from the mistakes of the other two students. By the end of the course, you will a basic vocabulary and a grasp on the fundaments of French grammar. And all this without the intimidation of being face to face with an instructor!
However, there are a few qualifications. First, the course is a little light on vocabulary. It does give you the tools to enlarge your vocabulary considerably, but this expansion consists largely of learning words such as "condition" and "politique" - no great feat. Lacking is any introduction to numbers, colors, days of the week, body parts, and other words which are both essential and completely unpredictable based on their counterparts in English. Second, if you are complete beginner, you may wish for more discussion of pronunciation. The students' pronunciation is hit or miss, and the course would never end if Michel Thomas always stopped to correct them. Thus you must have a good ear to tell, for example, that the letters such as "r" and "u" are pronounced differently in French than in English. Third, even after faithfully soaking up every point of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation offered in this course, you will still have a rather limited knowledge of French. Most likely, you will not be able to follow a conversation or a television or radio program, and reading the most elementary French books will require a dictionary. Thus "Speak French for Beginners" truly represents a beginning in learning this beautiful and fascinating language.
So why the five stars? For the price, there is nothing more effective. The method of instruction literally speaks for itself. Also, the course is efficient in that a great deal is taught in a relatively short time. Finally, in addition to vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, this course offers something much more lasting: the confidence to keep learning. So try "Speak French for Beginners" and get inspired!
Excellent at any level..... July 4, 2008 I just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in on this method. Our response to different learning methods is by nature, variable.
Although I think that Michel Thomas' method is extremely useful, it is not meant to be a complete "catch-all" course to fully learn the language by. Much reading and studying of grammar is necessary to learn any language.
Where Thomas excels is in very helpful tips by which to remember words and certain grammatic rules. They are often tips that you will never forget. (Example: in Spanish...."think of a 'female river' in the woods....ria, and add that ending to the verb to convey would, e.g. gustaria=I would like, or it would be pleasing to me).
I don't know what Mr. Thomas' original language was, but he certainly spoke English with an accent (?German). I found him quite easy to understand in his French and Spanish pronounciations...but perhaps that's where some of these negative reviews are coming from ("not real French"). Rubbish. It's a good method. He was a great teacher.
