| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description This work provides a vital resource for anyone who wants to access the Web successfully. It provides new strategies for uncovering the quality information that often remains hidden to Web users. The previous edition sold over 4000 copies and has been widely used as a textbook for teaching Information Studies courses, and, more generally, as a reference work for both under- and postgraduate students. It is illustrated with numerous 'screen snapshots' and other useful examples to demonstrate the strategies being explained. All chapters have been substantially revised, especially those on search engines, digital libraries and intellectual property. There are two entirely new chapters - one on the new media of blogs, wikis and YouTube, and the other on internet research skills that is specifically aimed at educators. It is suitable even for very experienced Web users. The challenge of finding quality information is increasingly the major issue in the ever-expanding online environment. It uses both Australian and international examples. Original and practical, "The Hidden Web" will prove an indispensable resource for all Web users - including very experienced ones - by providing them with new skills and strategies for uncovering quality information in the ever-expanding online environment. In this timely revision of the book, the first edition of which was published in 2003, all chapters have been thoroughly updated to reflect the substantial changes that have occurred in this dynamic arena over the past few years.

Strongly recommended November 13, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The book holds the hand of the naif reader from the very first page to the end, when the reader is no longer a naif one but a good practitioner. Very good examples and exercises. Few of listed features regarding some searching engines are no longer up-to-date (as in Altavista or Google, just to mention a few) but this is quite inevitable for a book published in 2003. If I can suggest an improvement to the author: provide web exempla too from non-English speaking countries as France, Germany, Italy and Spain. It could enlarge even more the number of readers.
