Product Description
With a blend of statistical analysis, opinion, love for the game, and a healthy dash of humor, authors Michael Kun and Adam Hoff challenge the myths and beliefs that have long afflicted football. No subject is off limits. The greatness of the 1972 Miami Dolphins? Skewered. America’s Team? Put in its place. Pittsburgh’s Berkowitz Fish Sandwich? Praised, obviously. Joe Namath? Well, he gets a little bit of everything. The Football Uncyclopedia gives equal time to owners and champions, stadiums and cities. It rushes to the defense of everyone from Shaun Alexander to Kurt Warner and of everything from the Heisman Trophy to Randall Cunningham’s marble business. It focuses on player legacies, NFL history, and hot-button issues, but it also delves into topics like celebrity misbehavior, on-air kisses, and the film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The Football Uncyclopedia covers the names, the nuances, and everything in between that make football an enduring American phenomenon.

Addicting recreational read! August 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In the interest of full disclosure, I bought this book because I know Adam Hoff, one of the authors. $15 is a little bit of an investment, though, so truth be told I bought it more because I always enjoy hearing his unique thoughts on sports and less because of the $0.15 cut he'll receive.
That may explain why I bought it, but there is only one way to explain why, exactly 24 hours after opening it, I've probably logged at least 4 hours reading it - it's simply a really entertaining book. Written in an irreverent, informative style, it contains dozens (if not hundreds) of short (2-3 pages at most) entries explaining, debating, and poking fun at some of the more interesting angles on professional and college football. With the season about to start next week, it makes the perfect TV companion - the entries are enough to keep you fully entertained during commercial breaks (which they did for me during last night's Olympic coverage), and are just engaging enough to keep you reading even after the televised action comes back - be sure to keep the Tivo remote nearby to hit "pause", as you'll probably get sucked in to the book more often than you'd anticipate.
