Teach Yourself Italian November 11, 2008 This is a review of the 2007 "new" (3rd? 4th?) edition of Teach Yourself Italian Complete Course Package (Book with 2 C/Ds) by Lydia Vellaccio and Maurice Elston.
Teach Yourself Italian contains the vocabulary (approximately 1,600 items including cognates) and grammar that would normally be covered in a moderate intensity, first-year university course in the U.S. The pluperfect, past remote and the subjunctive are not introduced, and little hint is given of the complexities entailed in using Italian prepositions.
The course will prepare the student to deal with realistic, everyday situations (introducing oneself, shopping, ordering in restaurant, making travel arrangements) and, ultimately, talking about preferences and opinions at a basic level. New material is presented in short, lively dialogues, which are recorded at a reasonable speed on the accompanying 75-minute C/Ds. Succinct and clear grammatical explanations with examples and charts and a variety of short exercises (with answer key) reinforce and expand on the points introduced in the dialogues. In what should be a "best practice" for all introductory textbooks, irregular or uncertain stress is indicated by underlining the stressed syllable. This is enormously useful to us with tin ears.
The text plus C/Ds represent quite a value: Introductory textbooks used in U.S. universities (such as Oggi in Italia) now cost nearly $150 plus the cost of a workbook. On the other hand, if you have an earlier edition of Teach Yourself Italian, be advised that this "new" edition does not contain much if any "new" language content. The "new" features include the underlining of stressed syllables, four progress tests, websites of interest, and improved page layouts.
I can't think of any reason why a student couldn't learn Italian "from scratch" using this text, but true beginners - and especially those who have not previously studied any foreign language - and those with less demanding goals (such as adding a learning element to a two-week holiday in Italy) might consider using Teach Yourself Beginner's Italian instead.
At the end of the course, I believe most students will be able to read uncomplicated articles (no Italian politics!) at lastampa.it, corriere.it, repubblica.it and elsewhere with moderate reliance on a dictionary. Students wishing to further develop their speaking and listening ability may wish to proceed to Teach Yourself Improve Your Italian (first published as Italian Extra!) and/or Colloquial Italian 2, both by Sylvia Lymbery.

It was new as announced. It was received in plenty of time and was perfect.
After my trip to Italy using Teach Yourself December 17, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was able to communicate and, most importantly, understand the Italian I heard in Firenze and Napoli (slightly different accents). Teach Yourself was an excellent help. I listened to it during my 20 minute commute to and from work for about two months. It is very important to listen until you can repeat the phrases or responses as if they are second nature. There are many reviews about how language courses appear before the trip, I can assure you after using the knowledge during my recent trip that this is an excellent course!
