Along with the 2-volume Genki book, I think this is the best textbook for beginners. Even though not much has been updated since the 1st edition, it's still excellent.
If you're taking Japanese in a university, you're probably following Genki. If you have time, consider reading through this book as well -- you'll pick up a lot of usage and grammar that is missing in Genki.
You can find the audio tapes for this book on the web, or maybe they'll start selling them again soon.
If you're choosing between this and Genki, you're probably better off with Genki just because it's so much more famous, so you'll find a lot of resources on the web to help your study, etc. Also, Genki gives you a lot more Kanji usage, and covers more modern language than this book.
 not revised where needed September 4, 2008
I have the 1st edition. I bought this "revised" edition expecting actual revisions and improvements. For example, lesson 5 has a rather outdated skit/situation in which a character places a phone call by talking to an international call operator. I thought a situation like this would certainly be updated for the 2nd edition. In fact, I am yet to discover any update except the different book cover. NO dialog contents in any of the lessons have been updated or changed. I would NOT call this as "revised". You might as well get the used 1st edition with a discount price. It's a little shame because I would give the 1st edition 5 stars and I used it for all my students.

I bought this book when I first discovered I was interested in learning Japanese. The book does use Kana from the beginning, and that caused me to buy books on learning to write Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.
I still have this book, and I still use it for reference. It's not an easy book for a complete beginner. You'll need other books to supplement it. But for overall usefulness for someone who is really interested in the language, and for someone who understands that they will need more than just this book, in my opinion it's excellent.

Its probably one of the best for those who have at least a basic background of Japanese skills or have learned it elsewhere. Because the book is mainly in kana and starts you right off into it. The revised edition is well organized and does define most of the words, occasionally theres some new words introduced that weren't defined. I found that the lessons move quickly so that you don't feel like that its taking to long to go through the book. This book is recommended by me, and I feel that it can help everyone learn Japanese if they try it out. Also, the tapes aren't included, i had to download them from somewhere else... thats the only real main issue i have.
