Terrific book for any writer August 6, 2008 This is a great book for someone who has written a screenplay and now needs help making it better.
Don't like revision? July 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
You might after this. Turn it into a creative as well as left-brain task. There are many ideas in here that have taken my writing to a whole new level, and if applied by others should do the same. Now my favorite book on revision.
Do yourself a favour and buy this book July 18, 2008 I've read several books about editing, style, and revision techniques and without a doubt this is the best I've come across so far. It covers an extensive range of topics, goes straight to the point, and most importantly presents them in a helpful, supportive manner. The examples cover a range of books from award winning literature to romance and children's books. The advice is clearly laid out and is presented in a manner that gives options not absolute rules (as unfortunately is the case with so many other books of this type). The checklists at the end of each chapter are very useful, I know I'll be referring back to this book over and over again.
I've just finished reading the book and already I've identified tons of ideas on how to sharpen up and polish my novel, things that were already there but just weren't developed to their full potential.
If you're serious about your novel (and even if you're just writing for the fun of it but still want to make most of it) buy this book. It's well worth the money.
Elizabeth knows her stuff! July 17, 2008 I consider Elizabeth's books on editing way above any college course I've ever taken in writing. Elizabeth knows her stuff. Her edits on my books, her conference workshops, and her books (like this one)are the best available.
The Best Part About This Book... July 16, 2008 ...are the checklists!
But, seriously, Elizabeth Lyon loads this book with chapter after chapter of information and insight, taking you through the revision process one comprehensive step at a time. But more than a book on revising, Manuscript Makeover reviews the fundamentals of fiction writing, like a teacher making sure you haven't forgotten any lessons.
The lengthy checklists at the end of each chapter are but wonderful bonuses to an already rich tome. And the price is a bargain--the book actually reads and feels like a major investment.
