Product Description

Shocked by the Bible sets the record straight with well-researched, controversial, myth-breaking assertions about what the Bible really does-and doesn't-say.

Myths and misconceptions about the Bible's content abound, and churchgoing Christians are often as confused as everyone else. Fed up with this lack of public knowledge, author Joe Kovacs has compiled some of the most crucial information for correcting people's faulty education on what the Bible really says. If readers have ever wondered about God, the Bible, or the meaning of life, and are just not satisfied with the answers they've received-or if they want to learn what the Bible really says on troubling questions-Shocked by the Bible is an essential resource for helping both Christians and non-Christians alike.

Kovacs says, "If people actually knew what is in their Bible-the nonstop sex and violence, the hilarious comedy, and the astounding facts their pastors never told them-they'd rush to crack it open and get the surprise of their lives."

Among the little-known facts Kovacs explores are:

  • Jesus said NO ONE has gone to heaven except Himself
  • The Bible never says Jesus died on a Friday or rose from the grave Sunday morning
  • "Christmas" is not mentioned in the Bible
  • "Easter" has vanished from the Bible
  • God wanted to kill Moses
  • "God the Father" is never mentioned in the Old Testament
  • There weren't just two of every kind of animal aboard Noah's Ark
  • The worst case of hemorrhoids in history is recorded in the Bible
  • Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were not Jews
  • Jesus made personal appearances on Earth in the Old Testament
  • The Bible tells you not to eat your dog or cat for dinner
  • God ordered many of His own people to get divorced
  • Elijah did not cheat death by riding a chariot to heaven
  • And many more

5 out of 5 stars Thank GOD someone dared to be honest!   November 19, 2008

Joe Kovacs takes the facts in the bible to a whole new level. He has the courage to be forward and "tell it like it is". For those who have ACTUALLY read the book they found out that there are a lot of subjects in the bible that are never spoken of at church or anywhere. I believe that if God had it written, it was intended to be read and talked about. Nothing is candy-coated. I am excited about the truth and relevance this book provides. I feel the only reason why anyone might give it a negative review is because of the conviction one feels when faced with the truth or that they never really read the book. I was not under the impression that the author was trying to condemn anyone from a "holier than thou" standpoint but to simply enlighten those who want to increase their walk with God though understanding the word better. I found the book to be very tastefully written and appreciated the humor. We are created in God's image and I believe God has a sense of humor also. I enjoyed the book so much that I bought a second copy to give as a gift and may buy more. Thank you!

2 out of 5 stars Shocking   November 7, 2008

You know what's really shocking? Wondering why you just don't read the bible. Then I guess you wouldn't need this book. I have a shocking fact for you also. Jesus says he was a minister of the circumcision. Jesus also taught to keep the commandments. He taught baptism. Paul taught we are under grace not the law and Jesus taught the law. Rightly divide the word of truth and you won't need this book. Realize that Paul give us the gospel today of the grace of God. Not Jesus' words in red. Now that's shocking! A risen savior gives Paul his gospel. Not the same gospel an earthly Jesus gave to the 12. That's shocking. Just compare Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to Paul. Totally different gospels given both by God. Check it out in the Bible. Available everywhere.....

1 out of 5 stars Not what you expect   October 28, 2008

At one point, this book takes care to create a strange distinction; that none of the Bible's people before Judah are actually Jews. I can not make guesses at the author's reason for furthering such an esoteric interpretation of the Bible in this one instance, in order to distance modern Christianity from Judaism, when to-the-letter literalism holds sway everywhere else, but I didn't much care for it.

1 out of 5 stars Superficial Book for the Scripturally Ignorant   October 21, 2008

This is yet another private interpretation of God's word that doesn't stand up to context of the Bible, Jewish Tradition, Christian Tradition (meaning Godly, not man-made), and is literalist in nature. For instance, using the author's mode of interpreting, he would tell you that "Raining Cats and Dogs" actually meant cats and dogs falling from the sky.

Essentially, it's ignorance for the Scripturally ignorant.

Please be wise and learn what the Scriptures really teach, by the infallible teacher, not from someone who arrogantly interprets for themselves... too much of that misleading people already.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but Not Necessarily Accurate.   October 19, 2008

I've looked through this book when I first got it in a work. A lot of the stuff he talks about is common sense, like Jesus not being born on December 25th. However, something I took issue with is his statement that no one is in heaven right now. I think his whole case falls apart by Jesus' own words. When He is hanging on the cross with the thief, He tells him "TODAY you will be with me in paradise." That means the guy was going straight to heaven when he died.
