Product Description When a condemned man with nothing to lose meets one with nothing to gain, everyone washed by the endless ripples of that encounter will forever recall the day a little bit of heaven invaded a whole lot of hell. Brady Wayne Darby and Thomas Carey could hardly have been more disparate individuals. Yet when Darby, a no-account loser raised in a dingy suburban trailer park, encounters Carey, a weary man of God, an entire--state indeed, a nation--is affected. Embark on a wondrous journey where death, guilt, and despair are unfathomably trumped by rebirth, forgiveness, and hope. Author Jerry Jenkins says: "This is the novel I have always wanted to write. I determine whether a fiction idea has merit by how long it stays with me. Does it rattle in my brain, and do I find myself telling it to my wife and other confidants? Is it the type of a tale that will draw me back to the keyboard every day? Two-thirds of my published books have been novels, and only three have had that effect on me. I give my all to every one, but special joy and anticipation attend those that genuinely feel like the best ideas. Riven is my fourth such labor of love. The two main characters have remained in my memory since high school 40 years ago. The story idea is perhaps 20 years old. And those mystical, interweaving elements I hope make it all work have been tugging at me for more than a decade. If a novelist has a life's work, this is mine. I hope in the end you agree and that Riven stays with you long after the final page."

A Must Read for the Christian Reader! October 27, 2008 Riven is a book that draws you into its characters from the very start. As you read, you grow emotionally tied to the main characters, always wondering what's next. Though Riven is a slow (but never boring) read, by the end you will find that the tempo of the book is very necessary in the end. The slow journey makes its point!
I can defintely see a movie out of this, so let's see what happens!
A must read for the Christian reader.
A Fantastic Powerful Story October 13, 2008 Riven is a very strong novel that was written very well. It produced strong feelings in me. There was a lot of the "wow" factor in this book. I don't want to spoil it for you and say who it is that is on death row or who this person killed to get there but let's just say that when this person arrived on death row it was a very noisy and rowdy place. There was never any quiet. When this person turned to God and gave himself to God the others made fun of him. Over the years he memorized so much of the bible that he would answer in scripture. After a while people started to listen to him. Eventually he preached all day long and everyone listened quiety as he spoke. People were turning to God because of him. It was beautiful. If you read this book you will not be disappointed and you won't stop thinking about it for a long, long time. It's a great work!
Jerry Jenkins Life's Work October 13, 2008 This book is by far the greatest work of Jerry Jenkin's life. It is his epic. When a person reaches the magnitude of Jenkins he becomes free to publish the story on his heart rather than the story that might sell. Riven is such a story.
A literary novel rather than a thriller, the pacing is slower than what you'd expect, but the writing is superbly tight, the characters deeply flawed and human, the storyline unpredictable.
I was deeply moved after reading this novel. It is one of the two or three best novels I've ever read. Seldom do I finish a book and get excited to recommend it to others. But this one is definitely in that category.
I had the same reaction to this book as I had after viewing Mel Gibson's Passion. I became deeply aware of my own sin that nailed Jesus to the cross.
Reading Riven reveals not only the heart of Jerry Jenkins, an author passionate about God, but also the heart of our Savior, who gave everything for us.
Riven--The book of Jenkin's Heart October 10, 2008 Riven, by Jerry B. Jenkins, Tyndale House Publishers, 2008, 558 Pages, Hardback, ISBN-13: 978-1414309040, $24.99
Jerry B. Jenkins, multiple mega-best-selling author, best known for the high-octane Left Behind series, took a creative right turn into character-driven fiction to write Riven, a novel he calls "the book of his heart," which reveals a story line he couldn't forget. Riven was inspired by a crucifix Jenkins saw at a Catholic retreat center more than twenty years ago. That crucifix birthed an unforgettable story in Jenkins with a unique plot and message. Riven is a Christian novel--with a Christian message painted in bold, unforgettable words.
While the book begins at Adamsville State Penitentiary's death row, the story rewinds seventeen years to chronicle the lives of unassuming Pastor Thomas Carey, his wife Grace, their family, and an ill-fated young man named Brady Wayne Darby. Darby's star-crossed girlfriend, Katie, his mother and little brother, Petey complete the major cast characters. Alternating chapters and scenes follow Carey and Darby until their lives intersect in an unforeseen, unpredictable, astounding way guaranteed to shock the reader and bring them to tears.
Although Carey and Darby come from different generations and dissimilar walks of life, each struggle with personal issues that bring them to the mercy seat of Christ--at different times for different reasons. Polar opposites, Carey's idealism and frustration and Darby's impulsive decision making because of a loveless, uncaring upbringing, reflect the struggles and often tragic consequences of real life. Complete texts of several classic hymns are cited. Don't gloss over them, as they are integral to the story.
Some reviewers think Jenkins departure from action-oriented writing to a character-driven style is a wrong choice--in my opinion it is not. The character development of Carey and Darby is essential to understanding the story and its powerful ending. It's a story of life, compassion, redemption, and the high cost of sin. Riven doesn't fit into a niche or genre', but I believe it is slated to become a classic. Jenkins has created in Riven, what Mel Gibson created in the movie The Passion--the reality and humanity of the cross. It will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned.
A Wonderful, Thought-Provoking Novel! October 9, 2008 Jerry B. Jenkins has blown my mind! "Riven" is a carefully woven tale of life and faith from both ends of the human condition. Brady, a man who has lived the hard knock life, is now reaping the fruit of his decisions as a resident of death row. Timothy is a preacher who has lived for Christ the best he can, but has been continually beaten down and rejected by the people he has tried to serve. It is when these two men meet and begin to develop a friendship that the reader can see God at work in the midst of this story.
This book is intimidating in size, but the pages turn themselves as the reader becomes so invested in what brought these men to the place they are in at the present time. "Riven" is a finely crafted read that can be digested easily regardless of the intense subject matter due to the frequent breaks within the chapters as the story oscillates between the characters. There were even a few chuckles in this intensely emotional tale. It is a thoroughly satisfying read.
