Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Last Great Detroit Lions QB   September 6, 2008
A very enjoyable read about the last great Lions quarterback, a man who never wanted the party to end, but never let that get in the way of getting the job done on the field. He wasn't the model for "athlete of the day", didn't throw the tightest spirals and wasn't the best runner. But few quarterbacks, before or after, had as fierce a desire to win as Layne did, and the Lions are still looking for his replacement, 50 years after trading him to Pittsburgh.

The one thing that I found weird about this book was the order. At the beginning of the book, you would expect to read about Layne's childhood and high school career. Instead, you go straight into his days with the Lions. In fact, the order of the book goes like this:

1. Lions
2. Steelers
3. Childhood
4. High School Football
5. University of Texas
6. Chicago Bears and New York Bulldogs
7. Retirement

Despite the strange setup of the book, it's still a very interesting read. Layne's teammate/lifelong friend Doak Walker was right: "Bobby never lost a game in his life, but time ran out on him a few times."

Highly recommended.
