Richard A. Hasler grew up in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. He is an ordained Presbyterian pastor. He holds a bachelor's degree from Houghton College, bachelor of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in church history from Hartford Seminary Foundation. He has served in churches in Ohio, New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. He is currently pastor of the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, Belpre, Ohio.
