Solid introduction November 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a good solid introduction to the Correllian tradition of Wicca, although the information contained within it can be applied to non-tradition specific study as well. The book is based on a year long course offered at Witchschool, and is set up with each chapter representing a month of study on a particular topic. It presents the material in an easy to understand, straight forward way, and while it doesn't really cover anything out of the ordinary for a beginner witchcraft book it is certainly one of the better books on the subject out there. It touches on the basic philosophies of Wicca including gods and goddesses and the wheel of the year, but also touches on herbs, oils and crystals in a very practical way. At the end of each chapter there is a series of exercises for the reader to practice to help build up magical skill and visualization. I would definitely recommend this book to any beginner, or anyone wishing to learn about this tradition.
Simple and Useful October 30, 2008 There are many books available on the subject of Witchcraft but this is one which certainly is refreshing, lucid and very easy to follow. It is clear the author is highly studied on the subject and speaks through experience, not just through intellectual concepts. The philosophy is clear and the flow of the chapters is very well thought of so as to guide a student step by step guidance through the essentials. I will certainly recommend this book and the series itself.
Perfect for beginners September 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Witch School, First Degree by Rev. Donald Lewis-Highcorrell is the first book in a three-volume series that introduces readers to Correllian tradition Wicca. A fourth volume is dedicated to mastering the art of ritual. The goal of First Degree is to provide enough knowledge that the reader should be able to initiate themselves into the Craft by the end of the book. There is even a ritual provided for the Outer Court initiate, should they choose Self-Wiccaning.
Correllian Nativist Wicca was originally formed in 1879 by a woman of Scots-Cherokee ancestry, Orpheius Caroline. In 1979, after the Council of Elders appointed new leadership, the Correllian tradition was opened to the public. They began creating a series of correspondence courses, which became the lessons found between the covers of Witch School.
Witch School is formatted much like a textbook, with a total of twelve chaptered lessons (one for each month, for a year's worth of tutelage). Each chapter covers a new facet of the religion, from magic to stones and crystals. An exercise is then provided, with an introduction to a different god in each lesson. The chapter then closes on a series of review questions.
The lessons are straightforward and easy to follow. Most of the information is relevant to any tradition of Wicca, not just Correllian. As is common practice, a student becomes an initiate after one year of study. The book is set up perfectly to accomodate this schedule with the monthly lesson style.
For the person who has been reading up on the subject for a while, initially there may not appear to be a great deal of new information in Witch School, First Degree. It is aimed more at someone who is completely unfamiliar with the religion and would need step by step guidance. I'm sure the second and third volumes would be appropriate for those who already have some knowledge of the Craft. However, anyone can benefit from the exercises provided, regardless of mastery degree. The detailed history of the various forms of deity is also a benefit not found in many other books on the subject. Witch School, First Degree, in the least, could make an excellent reference book for any library or a comprehensive refresher course. I'm eager to begin reading Second Degree.
