Product Description A funny and moving story of what happens when a boy's mother remarries a more observant man. Jason Siegel thinks his stepfather's new religious observances have gone far enough. First only kosher food at home. Then he is forced to wear a kippah (yarmulke). Now now baseball games on Shabbat! Jason is determined to play ball-no matter what. But when his plan backfires, Jason finds himself entangled in a situation that hurts his teammate's feelings and jeopardizes his relationship with his mother and stepfather. Jason's "Saturday Secret" brings him face to face with his stepfather for a touching reconciliation that helps Jason understand responsibility, truthfulness and the meaning of Jewish observance.

Growing Up July 30, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful story that vividly shows us the world through the eyes of a 6th grader, Jason Siegel--his hopes and fears, generosity of spirit and questioning of life's rules, fierce loyalties, and the just as fierce need to break free of the rules that just don't quite make sense. Talented author Miriam Rinn gives us an insider's view of the poignant, often turbulent sixth-grade year of Jason, whose rite of passage includes coping with the loss of his father when he was seven, and coming to terms with his step-father David, whose strict observance of the Jewish faith creates a dilemma for Jason--and helps him learn from his choices what is ultimately most important after all. Through the laughter and the tears, this book gives parents and young readers a moving and uplifting story to keep close to the heart long after the last page is finished.
