4 out of 5 stars One of the Best on the Market   June 15, 2008
This dream dictionary is one of the best on the market that I have found. I only wish she could have been more detailed in some of her descriptions. Some definitions are pretty vague. In all, a very good dream dictionary, especially for someone who is a beginner at dream interpretation.

I have two copies of this book for myself and buy copies for my friends. It is a great guide to help you understand your dreams.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Dream Reference Tool   April 6, 2008

The first part of this valuable tool explains theories about dreams as they relate to the subconscious mind, karma and reincarnation. It discusses chakra theory (the 7 spiritual energy centers of the human body or aura) along with a discussion about how dreams show us which chakras are out of balance.

We learn to remember dreams by keeping a dream journal by the bed. There is some general theory about how to apply dream interpretation. We are taught that we learn to understand the symbolic language of our own subconscious by paying attention to the feelings we get from our dreams, and to come up with a way of interpreting them that is unique for each of us. Essentially, by reading the definitions of symbols offered and by feeling into what our dreams are in an experiential way, we develop our own personal glossary of dream symbols.

The introductory materials conclude with a brief description of how dreams are the doorway to a more expanded awareness, or enlightenment.

The bulk of the book is over 130 pages of a glossary-type reference tool that is alphabetized for easy searching. I believe that by studying just a few pages a day, the reader can glean an overall feeling for symbolic interpretation that transcends literal book definition. That way, when a symbol comes up that is not listed in the book, the dreamer will have an intuitive sense of what is being communicated, based on paying attention to the symbolic meaning of other dreams as well as the meanings offered in the book.

I've learned bits and pieces of the material in this book over the years from many sources, but this is the best comprehensive treatment of dreams that I've seen.

Moonstone Star White is the author of the spiritual growth title High Way from Hell: Using Emotion to Fan the Fire of Enlightment.

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves every one of the 5 stars!   February 6, 2008

There are MANY different dream dictionaries, some with vastly different definitions. I found Betty Bethards' book to be the easiest to understand and the most relevant. She makes it a point to explain that dreams are not a way to foresee the future, but rather a way to help you understand yourself and things in your life at the moment. I can not stress how highly I recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Understanding Dreams   January 18, 2008

Betty Bethards The Dream Book: Symbols for Self Understanding is great source for those who are dreamers. 'The Dream Book ' offers a complete explanation of what dreams are " your greatest tool for understanding yourself and your life", how to work with your dreams "learn to remember them, recognize their meaning and use them to problem solve", and gives you a list of dream symbols to help you interpret their meanings.
What sets Bethards's book apart from other authors of the same subject is that she has a pragmatic approach, it's not "airy-fairy" and doesn't offer "witch-doctor" translations of dream symbols and their interpretations. Her simple writing style makes it accessible to everyone who has interest, at any level, in understanding their dreams, and she provides tools to help you develop skills to learn your dreams, to seek explanations (or problem solving) through dreaming, interpret dreams and give them meaning. "You are your own final word in dream interpretation...if doesn't feel right, keep exploring", eventually you'll get it.
