Amazon.com As a Carmelite monk, the 16th-century Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross was well trained in the systematic theology of St. Thomas Aquinas. In Dark Night of the Soul, St. John's sharply organized mind gives clean shape to his mystical belief in a loving Being somewhere outside the realm of feeling, thought, or imagination, who can only be known through love. Dark Night of the Soul describes the process of purgation, first of senses, and then of spirit, that precedes the soul's loving Union with God. To quote from this book would detract from the coiled power of its tightly focused picture of the soul's progress; suffice it to say that there has never been a better book for discouraged Christians. When you cannot understand what or why you believe, but you find yourself unable to abandon faith, look to St. John for help. --Michael Joseph Gross

This is by far one of the very best spiritual guides for anyone who is going through a trial that seems almost unbearably difficult to work through. It is a timeless classic that offers comfort, hope and a sense that this darkness can lead to transformation.
Inspiring book March 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dark Night of the Soul is a deep book, discussing a familiar struggle of seekers of Jesus Christ our Lord and savior. King David spoke of these lonely times for ones soul, when he felt seperated from Gods love.
Excellent! March 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've only begun reading this, since it was purchased along with The Wisdom of the Wilderness, but thus far it is excellent, and definitely both awe & thought inspiring.

Wow, I didn't know there was any inner transformation in Christianity with my Lutheran upbrining. The stanzas themself, are excellent to meditate on.
