Excellent **Companion to the Book** June 10, 2008 If you look at the cover of the map (even the "larger image" of the Amazon product picture), you'll see that it says "Companion map to the book Yosemite National Park published by Wilderness Press".
This is a great overview map for the entire Yosemite Park and a bit of the surrounding area, but it is as a companion to Schaffer's classic book that the map excels. The original editions of the book had a paper version of the map tucked into the back pocket, but it inevitably degrades. My book is from 1983, and I was quite happy to find this waterproof map is intended as a replacement -- the original map was tatters long ago.
Schaffer's book is required for a serious Yosemite backpacker, so these two are a perfect match. Other trail guides are good, but for Yosemite his book is probably best. Despite its subtitle "A Complete Hikers Guide", I think it is better thought of as a backpacker's guide, although it is also good for anyone that wants a more in-depth guide to the park. The 5th edition of the book, published 2006, is available on Amazon; its ISBN-13 is 978-0899973838.
But this map isn't detailed enough for navigation; any backcountry hiker should have the appropriate USGS topo maps (7.5 minute, not available on Amazon) -- or maybe a modern GPS unit, although depending on technological devices should be somewhat worrisome. Use this map for exploring which hikes look interesting, then leave it in the car when you head back to sleep with the bears.
OK, but there are better December 13, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Map was OK but scale is too large and print to small to make it easily usable. Good point is that the map has all the features one would need if caught in the backcountry. I would recommend Trails Illustrated instead.
