| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description Now updated and better than ever--the bestselling guide to knitting brilliant, timeless pieces Knitting For Dummies consistently ranks among our top-selling Dummies titles since it published six years ago, with 300,000 copies sold. Knitting For Dummies, Second Edition is for those new to the craft who are looking for a great introductory guide, as well as those already familiar with knitting who are looking for an easy-to-read, fun reference that introduces them to new projects and techniques. This revised and expanded edition not only provides the latest information and resources, but also step-by-step how-to instructions for all the knitting techniques explained in the book. Using easier-to-follow photos and illustrations, the guide demonstrates basic knitting stitches and shows readers how to decipher patterns and work with multiple colors. It also explains how to fix common knitting mistakes and relax stiff shoulders and fingers. Most projects also offer a list of variations, so knitters can expand their understanding and design projects on their own. This new edition also features a new section covering knitting online (blogs, e-zines, and Web sites), a new chapter on felting knitted projects (which has become very popular among beginners), the latest new yarns and styles, a new bibliography, and new sample projects and patterns, including "your first sweater" (an easy top-down raglan that requires no piecing), a bag knit in the round, and a tubular neckerchief kind of scarf.

Not "hooked" on knitting ... but if I were ... November 9, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A dear friend who is a fabulous knitter sent me a copy of this book, hoping to "hook" me on her favorite hobby (next to reading, that is). I glanced through it and found it to be as promised: a complete guide for a "dummy" like me!
But you "can't teach an old dog new tricks" and since knitting isn't high on my list of priorities, I'm going to pass Knitting for Dummies on to daughter Debbie who does show some interest in learning this skill ... AFTER I send my friend a copy of Crocheting for Dummies, of course. (Snicker!) I won a few blue ribbons for my crochet work "back in the day," so I think everyone should be proficient at crocheting. Yeah...right!
As a matter of fact, as the old bumper sticker says: I'd rather be WRITING (my first love). I wonder if there's a book "Writing for Dummies?"...hmmmmm
From what I see of this book, though, it would be an easy way to learn to knit...if I were so inclined. And I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn this awesome skill.
Dedicated to Linda from Maine.

Buy if... August 17, 2008 Buy this book if you're looking for answers on how to do certain things. This book filled the gaps left by "Stitch n bitch" and has helped me out of several jams.
The patterns are crap, but the reference is good.
Knitting for Dummies May 27, 2008 Not a good way to start out someone learning to knit. Not terribly well-written, either.
Knitting for this dummy April 27, 2008 I taught myself to knit with this book fairly quickly. Getting started was a little confusing, though and I had to do an internet search to find a video to watch about it. Some things are very clear and others I had a lot of trouble with (although I'm assuming it's just because I was learning).
I've not worked my way through all of this book, but I would say that it's a good way to get started knitting. =)
Not for dummies March 20, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I ordered this for a friend who wanted to learn how to knit. I have used Dummies books for lots of other subjects, and in general, have found them very helpful and clear. Not this one.
I understood "for dummies" to mean for people who know absolutely nothing about the topic but want to learn. I don't know if the authors are so experienced that they don't remember what it was like to be a beginner, or if it's just really bad editing, but this book jumps all over the place and even talks about designing your own sweaters in the first few pages, as if a beginner would understand what that means. Knitting lingo that only experienced knitters would know appear way too early as well.
The first couple of lessons, just casting on and knitting, are too complicated and have errors. The diagrams don't go with the text or are on the next page from the text (?!) so you can't refer to both at the same time. The material is presented in a bizarre order and the ugly format using cheap newsprint with the color pictures in a clump in the center just doesn't do it for a knitting book. I'm so glad I shipped it to myself so that I could send it back in exchange for the Teach Yourself to Knit Visually book, which is superb, packed with color pictures, and costs only a couple dollars moreTeach Yourself Visually Knitting (Teach Yourself Visually). From now on, I will go to the bookstore to review a Dummies book in person before purchasing! A real disappointment.
