1 out of 5 stars Dry and boring   September 23, 2008
This book is so dry and dense...the material is not difficult, but the book is poorly organized and written in such a boring manner that you really do not want to take the time to read it (even if it's for a class). I have other books on health care organization that are MUCH more user-friendly and actually interesting to read. Don't buy this book unless you really have to.

4 out of 5 stars not for layman   July 25, 2008
There are certain books used in graduate Health Care Admin classes. This is one of them. This book is not easy to digest and it was not meant to be. It approaches wide range of topics regarding health care management in US, but not in great details. For greater details one needs subject specif books. Overall I would say this is a good graduate-level intro to health care management book. I have the 4th ed, which was published in 2004. I found myself constantly going back to it. It's missing a star because it does not have a table or a key section for abbreviated terms; the authors assume that we know or love spending time looking up for hundreds of terms they probably defined in previous chapters. Also I would have liked to see brief contents and a detailed contents in the beginning. 4th ed. has only detailed contents. So, for example, if you are looking for a chapter on HR, if you had brief content, you'll see that chapter starts from page 531, but in detailed content you have to flip through 7 content pages to find it.

4 out of 5 stars The book is a little hard to read   October 1, 2007
My professor warned us in advance that it will be a hard read.. IT IS but I have to read it for Health Care Management.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoying this book so far!!   September 28, 2007
This is the required book for my Health Service Administration course. It is well written and has excellent case studies with each unit.

1 out of 5 stars I hate this book!!   February 26, 2004

I absolutely without a doubt hate this book. It is a required book for a course that I am taking. It uses way to many initials instead of writing the complete name of each organization, so unless you have one heck of a memory you arn't sure which organization that those initials stand for. It is a very hard book to sit down and read because it is way to boring, the authors go on and on about about the topics instead of presenting the topics in a clear straight forward way. The questions at the end of each chapter are mostly based on your opinion, so you are never quite sure if your answer is correct or not. I can't wait till this class is over so that I never have to read this book again!!!
