Understanding American medicine and health October 12, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a one-of-a-kind book. With a readable mixture of scholarship and humor, Mr. Green reviews the struggle for primacy among medical and popular health fashions over the history of the US. Before I read this book, I thought that the current state of medicine was inevitable and unquestionable. Not so; there was a struggle for domination that retains some signs of life today. Remember the old Saturday Night Live skits about leeches? In addition, food and health fads that I never knew of, once held the minds of the avant garde, just as yoga and raw food do now. For example, the Kellogs and Post cereals were once at the heart of complete programs of health/fitness, taken very seriously by the hip public. Likewise graham crackers. This book is illuminating and an easy read.
