Product Description
Now in its Ninth Edition, this classic text and reference maintains its popular holistic approach to the complexities of critical care nursing. The book's comprehensive coverage begins with the psychosocial concepts of care and progresses through assessment and management of a variety of disorders. Now under the lead authorship of Tricia Morton, this revision of the classic Hudak text maintains the goal of promoting excellence in critical care. Each chapter was written by a subject matter expert to ensure the most up-to-date and accurate information. Presenting theory and principles within the context of practical application helps the reader to gain competence and confidence in caring for critically ill patients and their families. As always, the patient as the center of the health care team's efforts is emphasized throughout. It should be noted that the second author, Dorrie Fontaine, is the Past-President of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

Not for Nurse Kracthit February 7, 2007 This is a kindler gentler book on nursing. Provides good sense, good treatment methodology for the WHOLE patient. In a word CONSIDERATION, good old fashioned care and concern for all aspects of patient care are the primary focus, but don't be fooled as the didactic content and treatment modalities are definetly current.
A Great Theoretical Aspect on Critical Care March 19, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Since this is the only critical care text book I've used, I have no real basis of comparison. I'll try to be as objective as possible.
I'm using this book for my critical care class in nursing school. I've covered several sections of this book and can say that this book explains the material rather well for the student nurse.. and possibly the new nurse on the critical care unit.
The book is well-structured and organized starting with critical care nursing in general and discussion on practicing hollistically and goals of the critical care nurse with plenty of evidence-based research to help support the future evidence-based practicing nurse. The authors then progress by system discussing assessments and common pathologies found in the critical care environment and expected symptoms, diagnostics, treatments, and how the nurse should care for the client with that particular disease. Aside from the text, countless tables, charts, and graphics are available to highlight key points and provide more indepth coverage on certain areas. NCLEX-style questions and case studies are also available to help facilitate learning.
So as a nursing student, I find the text very insightful and informational when working with critical care level clients. The pathophysiologies are indepth and helped me develop a clinical picture for my clients and the diagnostic and treatment modalities were thorough. A solid text.
Critical Care NURSING: A Holistic Approach - for NURSES only. October 16, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am required to use this book as part of a Critical Care Emergency Medical Transport Paramedic class (CCEMTP). This book contains a great deal of very easy to interpret information, but it is not sufficient for EMS personnel. While I've enjoyed reading this book in general and I would continue to read this book to better my personal knowledge level, I would not use it for future educational purposes unless I was a nurse seeking to increase my training level. I do wish that the authors would get together and come up with a Critical Care Paramedic book to use for EMS training; their writing style is easy and comprehensive and there is no randomness to their book - they get to the point and give you the information you need.
The disc that comes with the book did nothing but repeat the information in the book; there were a couple of tests, but I didn't find any of the disc contents to be particularly helpful. And their pharmacology information is limited; it would have been nice to be able to read more about critical care pharmacology in one book as opposed to having to purchase a completely different book.
I do like the fact that at the beginning of every chapter they give you a long list of websites that you can visit pertaining to the topic you're about to read. It gives you another source- an educational second opinion- to refer to.
