5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Contribution to the History of Soaring   July 30, 2001
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

Dr. Gary Fogel has compiled an outstanding contribution to the history of soaring. He tells of the many "firsts" that occurred in the San Diego area, including flights made by Lindbergh, Bowlus, Brown, Robinson, and many others. It's clear that the author did his homework and communicated directly with many of the original soaring pioneers. The material is not conducive to a (fiction) novel and Fogel doesn't try to spin it into one. Instead, he tells a fascinating documentary, with historical accuracy, accompanied by original photographs of the historic gliders. I think anyone with an interest in the history of flight should enjoy this book immensely.

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating but fragmented and incomplete   May 25, 2001

Wind and Wings: The History of Soaring in San Diego is a well-researched, but somewhat fragmented account of the San Diego soaring scene from the early days into the 1960s. A great amount of detail is listed for specific events, such as who entered which sailplanes at a certain soaring meet. Yet at the same time, we are left wondering what ever happened to Woody Brown, Hawley Bowlus, John Robinson, and other fascinating people of this era and place. Instead of being told in a narrative form, the book is more a collection of small papers printed together. Despite this, Wind and Wings does give us a glimpse into an era when thousands of people would gather to see gliders fly, and it does help counter the often-implied view that soaring in america began only in the east. Given the dearth of books being published these days about soaring, glider pilots interested in the history of their sport may find the book well worth buying. For the general reader there are better choices. There are reproductions of some spectacular photographs of ridge soaring at Torrey Pines.
