Classic Architecture Always In Style October 25, 2008 Bret Parsons has done a wonderful job bringing Colcord and his architecture to life. The book has appeal for architects, designers, historians and those who just love traditional architecture. Having grown up in the area where most of his homes were built, I had seen many of his homes, but never knew the name of the architect. The book is richly filled with floor plans, marvelous illustrations from the past and present and wonderful descriptive text. I would love to see Bret Parsons do more books on some of the other architects who practiced in Southern California during what I believe to be the golden age of residential architecture, the 1920's and 1930's.
A Delightful Surprise! September 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Admittedly never having heard of Colcord, I was surprised to learn so much about him by way of this well-packaged book. Filled with photos both old and new, floor plans and renderings, Parsons and Angel City Press have succeeded in filling a gap about mid-twentieth century architecture in Los Angeles by bringing the work of Colcord to our attention. Parsons' writing is insightful and refreshing when it comes to breathing life into each of the homes in this book. And, because of the Hollywood connections surrounding many of these houses, this book is a must-have for those who love the blending of the movie industry and architecture with a longing for the days when homes had true character -- unlike so many of today's cookie-cutter "spec" development structures being touted as luxury homes. One only hopes Parsons is at work on more such titles to keep the history and appreciation of our built environment alive. And, of course, kudos to Angel City Press for making Colcord Home available.
Praise for Colcord Home September 5, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
As an Interior Designer I have purchased many books on architecture and design. This book is not just standard coffee table fare, nor merely a book about an architectural genre or persona. Bret Parsons has humanized the architect himself, and personalized the stories of those who have resided within the "Colcord Homes". Architectural books can often be too dry or littered with too many pictures. With authority, knowledge and style Bret has accomplished the impossible. As a child growing up in the Midwest I longed for a "Leave it to Beaver House". Little did I know that the real father of that home was Gerard Colcord.
