Great book June 10, 2008 I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have tried many of the recipes in it. Many of the tips and recipes are wonderful and it is nice because there is a section devoted to teens, men, elders, etc. But, I have to disagree with her suggestion to put butter on a burn - very very bad to do (put your burn under cold water instead!). Otherwise I very much enjoy the book, and it is a very useful part of my library now.
This is an awesome book April 28, 2008 My plan for getting this book was to make a hand and body lotion that actually works for me. I've tried over 10 of these recipe's and I can't say that I'm disappointed. I've spent hours and hours pouring over the info in this book and it's all sound advice. It gives you enough knowledge to even make your own concoctions. The only thing I'm not truly happy with is the recommendations in the back on where to get your ingredients. Take my advice and get them at Majestic Mountain Sage in Logan Utah. Also, check out the internet for other recipe's. All in all this is a good book....especially for the price.
Excellent ! Comprehensive! Precise! & Concise! April 20, 2008 I purchased this book several months ago and it has quickly become the favorite in my natural body care book collection. I enjoy it so much that after I somehow lost it, I purchased another! Ms. Falconi seems very sincere in home-crafting and nature and her desire to help others to understand and learn the art. She really knows her stuff and does an excellent job explaining techniques to making herbal infusions, tintures, infused oils, salves and balms, using aromatherapy oils, powders, and creams. She also has succinct deffinitions for some of the major herbs and essential oils. The information in this book is very hands on and less scientific. If you're looking for chemical structures and such... this isn't the book. I have made several of the recipes and have loved them all... so have my friends and coworkers! Recipes are grouped by type of use: Facial care, Lip, mouth and tooth care, Hair and scalp, Whole Body treatments, Hands and feet, Especially for women, Especially for men, Especially for teens, Especially for babies, Especially for elders, and First aid. I have found that the recipes I've used so far very much accomplish the stated/desired effect. I really can't rave enough about the recipes and the directions on how to make them! I believe anyone who wants to make safe, superior, poison and petroleum free body care products will thoroughly enjoy this book! Good Luck!
Clear content; insufficient warnings. Use with caution! April 9, 2008 17 out of 20 found this review helpful
Dina Falconi did a credible job of explaining plants, procedures and recipes clearly and thoroughly. The book contains very few photos and very little artwork; this may present a problem if you're a visual learner.
In the book, there is a wealth of information on infusions, tinctures and vinegars, as well as on how to use them. The book includes recipes to care for face, lips, mouth, hair, scalp and body. There are special sections on women, men, teens, babies, and elders, as well as natural first aid. I have been very pleased with all the recipes I've tried thus far.
What I didn't see but expected to be prominent was a warning section. Its absence is a serious flaw. Some of these preparations--particularly essential oils because they are so concentrated--contain inherent risks, and information on these risks should be a part of any book on herbal self-care.
Some of her recipes are risky. The Mountain Rose Herbs website (which Falconi lists in her resources) gives a list of warnings about essential oils. Some are labeled "Do not use at all, or under the supervision of a qualified expert." Among these is camphor. Falconi includes camphor in a cold sore lip balm and a liniment balm. Another is thuja. Falconi includes thuja essential oil in many different recipes, including the cold sore lip balm mentioned above, and states only that it "can be irritating to the skin" under her description of this essential oil. Yet another is penny royal; Falconi does properly state that this can bring on a miscarriage, but this information should have been given more visual weight. She does not mention penny royal essential oil in her section of general descriptions. The last essential oil in this "do not use" list that appears in Falconi's book is wintergreen, which she uses in a number of recipes and gives no warnings at all under her description. The Mountain Rose Herbs list gives other warnings about using other essential oils under certain conditions, and Falconi violates these sometimes, too. I'm not saying the list is definitive, but it certainly made me look twice at the recipes in this book. Find it at www.mountainroseherbs.com; click on "Products," then "Essential Oils." A link to the list is at the bottom of the page.
Because of glaring safety errors, I could not give this otherwise fine book a higher mark. Use it with great care!
Great recipes and instructions! January 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an amazing book to help anyone make creams, lotions, salves, shampoo, and body products. The instructions are clear and user friendly, and the recipes are interesting and cover a wide range of uses. There is a section for women, babies, teens, men, elders, and general recipes for anyone. The recipes also allow for creativity, experimentation and fun!
