Book Description Inspiration and information to help you plan (and dream about) your next big trek. This book will help you realize your dreams of hiking among the world's highest peaks and most scenic canyons, discovering wilderness far from the clamor of civilization, encountering rare birds and animals, glorying in sunsets over glacier-clad ranges, and feeling the joy and achievement of hiking some of the world's most spectacular trails. Peter Potterfield has selected the great hikes of the world from personal experience, having hiked and photographed hundreds of trails to arrive at this selection. The adventures described range from weekend overnights to four-day hut trips to epic journeys that take a few weeks out and back. None requires technical mountaineering skill. Features include details on trail conditions, levels of difficulty, best seasons, approach strategies, hazards, and maps. Hikes include: John Muir Trail, California; Wonder Lake to McGonagall Pass, Alaska; Tour de la Vanoise, French Alps; Kungsleden, Swedish Lapland; K2 Base Camp; Grand Canyon rim to rim; Mount Kilimanjaro; Cerro Fitz Roy, Argentina; and Shackleton's Crossing, South Georgia. 115 illustrations.

I wish I had more time to spare March 25, 2008 Wonderful photos and great hikes. The book offers enough inspiration for at least a couple of years. The descriptions of the trails are structured and clear.
Great overview of scenic hikes February 29, 2008 This book provides both a high level overview of 23 hikes from around the world, and some planning details such as transportation, dangers, seasons, etc. Highly recommended for people interested in hikes that are both scenic and challenging. The book is a little weighted toward north american hikes.
Beautiful Book December 28, 2007 This book is chock full of breathtaking photos. I hope to experience many of these hikes in my lifetime. This book certainly gives me inspiration to get out there!
Inspiring Letdown March 22, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bough this book with the assumption that when it said it contained maps, that it meant topographical maps. I wanted something I could use rather than what look like hand-drawn sketches. I am planning a hike of the Kungsleden, and turned to this book because there is such a paucity of information in English regarding this hike. As it stands, there is still not a lot of information. One positive thing about the book I found was it is great inspiration for other hikes that I have not heard of. Perhaps I will try them after the Kungsleden, just not with this book's "Maps" as a guide.
Good Book January 15, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a good book with good information and ideas for trips. The pictures are nice and most other outdoor enthusiasts love to look through it.
