From the supplier: Statistics from the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey show that of the $120 billion that Americans bet on illegal gambling in 1993, about $80 billion was wagered in sports. Sports gambling has also fed the public's appetite for sports news, which provide information for betting odds and point spreads. This has led some sports organizers to consider banning newspapersand magazines that publish point spreads to avoid gambling's negative influences on players and sports fans.
