This is one of the best strength training books I have invested money and time into. It covers the dominant strength exercises in detail and includes great photos to enhance the learning process. This is well worth the money if you plan on getting strong and doing it the right way.

This is by far the best lifting book available. The squat section alone is worth the price. I wish I would have had it years ago. I used to have problems with knees and back from squat and deadlift and the technique in this book helped tremendously.

As an older novice to barbell training, Starting Strength was mandatory reading to understand the physics and physiological principles of proper technique. I found the book comprehensive in its coverage and informative regarding specific techniques of basic exercises that serve as a foundation for any strength-training program.

Other novices should read this book carefully before embarking on a strength-training program for two reasons: (1) to maximize the desired effects of training and (2) to avoid unnecessary injuries that will only delay the goals of (1).



5 out of 5 stars must read before you touch a barbell   June 11, 2008
This book is incredible. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get stronger. Even after being an avid weight lifter for 10+ years I was able to make sizable improvements in my form. I also got stronger from follow the ideas in this book rather then the years of misinformation I had recieved from weight room gossip and muscle mags. Truly a must have for anyone involved in barbell training.


5 out of 5 stars Not making progress? READ THIS BOOK!   June 10, 2008
I thought I knew how to bench. Nope. I thought I knew how to squat. No way. I thought I knew what an overhead press was. Negative.

I have been lifting since college (I am now in my late twenties, so about 10 years). Only after I read Starting Strength can I say that I am confident with the big 3 barbell lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift.

This should be mandatory reading prior to setting foot in a real weight room.

Oh, I increased my bench press by 25lbs in one month too.
