Editorial Reviews:

Book Description
Completely revised edition with additional features and a new foreword. An all-in-one guide, this log includes complete, clear listings of the crucial routines, equipment, safety gear, and other data that every skipper must have on hand. This unique log will help make every boat owner a reliable captain, a sound seafarer, and a good host. It combines the features of a boat's customized manual with a boat owner's personal diary and guest register, striking a balance between practicality, flexibility, and thoroughness that all boaters will value. The log provides ample space to record the complete daily record of a boat's cruises and activities, including entries for course steered, speed, distance traveled, weather, tides, barometric pressure, and personal observations. It features tricks of the pilot's trade, those easily forgotten mathematical shortcuts to coastal navigation. A new safe cruising section provides concise descriptions of how to radio for help or rescue a person overboard; and, for those who love the traditions of flying flags afloat, a guide to flag etiquette has been added. This handsome log and quick-reference resource will become an essential companion aboard every yacht afloat.

5 out of 5 stars A great sailing record-keeper   June 8, 2007

John Rousmanire is the Mick Jagger of writing about sailing but with more grace. My wife and I found this log to be perfect for our gentle overnight excursions and coastal cruising, even if we didn't keep rigorous track of every measurement Rousmanire provides for. We used the extra space for diary entries, and at some point will be able to review some fine memories (and count up our sea-time if we ever want to go for licenses). Now my grandchildren are being introduced to sailing and have started a copy I gave them. The illustrations and brief quotations on each page from sea lore, poetry, and wisdom are just right for conveying the romance of sailing for fun.

5 out of 5 stars A new type of boating log and onboard reference book   April 28, 1997

My goal in assembling this log book was to provide the blend of practicality, flexibility, thoroughness, and personality that I've long thought has been missing in log books. I've included an innovative way to record weather observations and plenty of open space so navigators can enter the information that's important to them NOW. I've also included safety skills, a summary of the rules of the road, pages for recording the names of your gear, a section for listing guests -- and dozens of funny or inspiring quotes by great boating writers. Norton has packed all this into a great looking book.John Rousmaniere, author
