3 out of 5 stars When you need help getting from the beach to the boat...   March 28, 2003

This was the first book on sailing I read before I could get to the copy of "Basic Keelboat" my instructors had given me. I had bought it because it seemed to fill in those mysteries that hung above my beginner's mind like a cloud, such as how one docks or gasses up the motor. I remember being annoyed at the time that the authors laid on the sailing lingo without defining terms on the same page; but now that I've returned to re-read it after reading a few other books in between, I see that it does what I had originally intended: it just shouldn't be viewed as a book of instruction, which it isn't beginner-friendly enough to do. Beyond that, it serves nicely as a bridge from land to the ideal waters where the technique books work...

5 out of 5 stars Great sequel to first book   November 7, 2002

It's exactly what it claims to be. I read the first book and found this addition great. Good for a beginner.

1 out of 5 stars Perhaps the (hardly) Everything Sailing Book?   August 16, 2002
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

Just started sailing a few weeks ago, found and bought and digested 4 book on sailing since them - this one does not impress.

A summary look at the glossary reveals that proofreading was skipped entirely here. Several definitions (like "Sink" and "Surf") do *not* have entries, and the definitions have been attached as "#2" to the previous entry. (looks like some kind of computer "glitch" that was not caught.)

Very, VERY basic concepts like "Points of Sail" and descriptions of them are missing entirely! Reading this book will leave you in the dark unless you have read a book on fundamentals first.

Little "E-notes" and "E-alerts" are scattered throughout the text. Unfortunately, they never seem to be appropriate to the chapter or subject being discussed. (For example, the section on "Abandoning ship" has a note about keeping your ropes neatly coiled for appearance sake.)

This book DOES have a ton of information about operating your boat *under engine power* - but assumes that you have a motor/steering system not found on smaller boats.

DO read this book for "fun" stuff like the rituals required to rename your boat. DO read it if you *Think* you already know "Everything about Sailing" - you *may* learn something new.
