Editorial Reviews:

Book Description
Boat Docking (Close Quarters Maneuvering for Small Craft) is a book about how to dock a boat!

It contains many concrete examples of boat docking, from the elementary to the advanced, and also has chapters discussing the theory of close quarters maneuvering. The book is comprehensive, yet achieves its depth using language and tone which are accessible and minimally technical.

Although Boat Docking can be read through from start to finish, each of its various sections also stands alone, so items of interest may be referred to individually.

Boat Docking contains an "Overview" section, followed by a chapter describing every basic docking example imaginable, and most of the esoteric ones. Other chapters explain the interactions of the hull with water and air, how a boat steers (it's not completely straightforward!), how to use lines and fenders (there is more to good line work than one would think), and then there is a short section on the psychology and sociology of docking. Don't worry, it's fun to read! The conclusion draws an intriguing parallel between boat docking and affairs of the heart, using an extended metaphor on "close quarters maneuvering"!

If there's anything important to say about close quarters maneuvering, you'll find it in Boat Docking.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable Docking Info for Beginners   May 12, 2008
I bought this book after I bought my first boat, a Catalina 30 auxiliary sailboat. I wish I had bought the book first. It might have saved me some expense and frayed nerves. It is an excellent book for people who are new to docking small craft. As the years go by I still find the book helpful when encountering unfamiliar close quarters maneuvering situations. Therefore even intermediate or experienced skippers may find value in the book. I keep the boat onboard.

Some suggestions for the next edition.
- Include more advice for single engine sailboats docking in a strong crosswinds. What information is there is good, but it could be expanded.
- Print the book using a sturdy water resistent paper.
- Consider a wire coil binding to allow the book to lay flat when open.

4 out of 5 stars Boat Docking   March 18, 2008
I am a first time large boat owner and found the book along with it's simple diagrams quite helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Quick read   October 13, 2007
This book proved to be very useful, filled with practical information with a little humor salted in. My initial criticism was that the book is geared more to single engine boats than twin screws, but I realized as I read on that the single engine basics, once understood, more than apply to twin engine boats. This is a quick read and a couple of hours spent with this book will save you hundreds of hours (and dollars) of boat and dock repair!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book   June 12, 2007

This is a great book with humor in it. Its loaded with information. By admitting that docking is difficult, it sets the stage for the reader to understand the challenges of docking.

Well worth the price.

I was disappointed with and returned this particular book for a refund. Very little inside concerning twin engine inboard operation.
