Itas easy to see how athletes can get down and depressed. They live with failure every day. Take for example the troubles that plagued professional golfer Jackie Gallagher-Smith in 1997. She had worked hard in 1996 to get her Tour card, which would have enabled her to compete on the LPGA Tour in 1997. She finished 13th in qualifying school, which was good enough to put her on the Tour in 1997.
So what happened to her when the 1997 season opened? While playing the first hole of the first event of the season, she tried to extricate her ball from a bunker. Her club head slammed into the lip of the bunker, and she injured her hand.
As a Christian, she had a choice. She could get angry at God, blame him for her troubles and sink into despair. Or she could continue to lean on himawhich is what she did. Later, she told a Sports Spectrum magazine writer about that decision, saying, aoeGod builds your character through troubled times, and he wants you to draw closer to him when you have difficulties. People tend to push God away because they think he doesnat care, but those are the times God really wants you to cling to him.a
With Jackieas story in mind, letas look back at the difficulties the psalmist faced in Psalm 88: aoeMy soul is full of trouble.a (verse 3) aoeMy life draws near the grave.a (verse 3) aoeI am like a [person] without strength.a (verse 4) aoeYou have taken from me my closest friends.a (verse 8)
It seems that, like Jackie, the psalmist faced what seemed to be unfair circumstances. And although there is a continuing sadness in the psalmistas story of affliction, there is an important similarity to Jackieas story. Both continued to lean on God and depend on him. Jackie talked about clinging to God, and the psalmist, by his writing, shows that he was continuing to pray to God. He knew that cutting off communication with God while in a crisis was disastrous, and he continued to hold on to the only one who could see him through.aFrom the aoeWeekend: Extra Pointsa for Psalm 88

Perfect for any sports fan. July 29, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My ten year old spotted this Bible at a recent trip to our local Christian book store and couldn't quit talking about it. He couldn't wait till it came in the mail and was so happy with it. My son is an avid sports fan and he knows the athletes well. He has really enjoyed reading all the testimonies. Because our son goes to a Christian school he is pretty knowlegeable about the Bible and has memorized a lot of scriptures.(For his age.) I am so excited because I know that this will only encourage him more to read the Bible and get into the Word. I feel like anything that makes learning more fun is definetly the way to go. I can't recommend this Bible enough and I think my son will enjoy his for several years.
Great item April 11, 2007 My son really enjoys reading the testimonies of the athletes. It's been a great inspiration for him.

This was a Christmas gift for my son who is an avid sportsman. This will be a great companion to the Bible he already has, and a great help for the high school students he mentors.
Excellent Devotional for Sports Fans November 6, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This Bible is an excellent devotional for sports fans! It covers, I think, every sport there is, highlighting certain athletes, teams, or memorable sports events and tying them into the message of the Bible. My personal favorite (being a Cubs fan) is the parallel it draws between Psalm 106 and Chicago Cubs fans -- with the common feature being "longsuffering!" Definitely a must-buy for the Christian sports fan.
A great Bible for all sports fans June 25, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Sports Devotional Bible makes the Bible relevant for me with bibical principles illustrated through sports analogies and lessons. The devotionals are short and concise and take about 5 minutes a day. It is a well-conceived spiritual game plan for spiritual development that will help you to build your faith.
