LOVED this book. July 25, 2008 I LOVED reading this book. I loved it so much, I read it a second time once i finished it. There are a lot of cheesy teen romance novels out there and this is one is def. one of the most enjoyable the i've read (and i've been reading a lot of them lately). It's cute, romantic, and i couldn't put it down. I stayed up until 5 am reading this i loved it so much!! You should def. check this book out.
Love only true in fairy tales? "Then I saw his face, and I'm a believer..." July 13, 2008 If there was a theme song for this book, it would be Smash Mouth's "I'm a Believer".I have read other books by Elizabeth Chandler, including _Kissed by an Angel_ trilogy and the Dark Secrets series, and they are all great novels. Chandler is a great writer.
In _Summer in the City_, Elizabeth Chandler manages to make the fictional world of Jamie Carvelli(the main heroine) a realistic and believable one. Jamie's parents are divorced, and she was raised mostly by her dad. She always been daddy's little girl and love sports as much as her dad does. She excels in many sport and enjoys watching sport games too. Despite being a tomboy, she secretly reads romance novels and earnestly wants to experience real love and romance. All the guy she dated before were jocks and wanted to use her because she's coach's daughter.
In order to avoid, being the third wheel in her dad and Miss Matlock's budding relationship; she visits her mother in Baltimore, MD. She goes there for the summer Lacrosse Camp. Just when she escaped her dad's mushy relationship with her school's guidance counsler, she has to witness her mom (the romance writer)'s relationship with a younger man, Viktor.
Next door to her mom's house, she meets two college guys, Ted and Andrew and befriends them. Andrew starts to take her out on romantic dates, but something is missing. She isn't falling in love with him, why? Then there's Josh, the young coach of her lacrosse girl varsity team. They're about the same age, but she can't seem to get along with him. In spite of that, she becomes increasingly curious about him. On the field, Josh is strict and professional. Then there are gentle and nice sides of Josh. The one that laughs and takes care of his friends and family.
She later signs up to help teach basketball and do afternoon camp for kids. Her good friends Ted and Mona are pairing up, and there seems to be a conspiracy that keeps pulling Josh and Jamie together or well letting them butt heads. Jamie keeps misunderstanding Josh, and yet, she enjoys the time she spends with him.
Elizabeth Chandler is a great writer. Although, I'm not that into sports as Jamie is, Chandler writes about the lacrosse moves like she has played it herself. All these sports terms and stuff, makes it seem so realistic. Soon, Jamie's character and her love of sports and her yearning for romance becomes easy to relate. Chandler being a resident of Maryland is able to depict the city of Baltimore and the attractions there vividly.
I read Summer in the City and I thought I was watching a movie or TV series because the author is able to write and describe everything so realistically. The book is a nice romance comedy. I found myself laughing at some parts towards the end. It's a fun and quick read. I finished the entire book in less than two days. I highly recommend this book. I love it! I haven't felt excited about a book for a while. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
SPOILERS ------------ As a book written completely in Jamie's perspective, I was surprised and amused by how Josh's feelings were revealed and things were seen through his eyes. It's so funny how all the misunderstandings are all cleared in the end. It's a well-written novel and I'm so glad I bought it.
LACROSSE? September 18, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
this book was not the type of book for me!..if you enjoy books such as gossip girls, clique novels, crank, and the very detailed girly scenes and novels i definitly wouldnt reccoment this book. She plays lacrosse and helps with camps and its mostly about all sports. I love sports and play basketball and volley and track and softball on select teams and i still didnt enjoy this book as much as i expected to.

SUMMER IN THE CITY is a novel based around sports, boys, and romance in the big city of Baltimore, Maryland, where Jamie is going to attend college in the fall. I didn't know if I was going to like this book at first, but I'm happy to say I was pleasantly surprised! I'm not a big sports fan, but this book had enough romance in it to keep me interested!
Jamie's parents divorced a long time ago and she lives with her dad. She and her father are very close because Jamie is really into sports and her dad is a football coach. She is the kind of girl that all the guys like hanging out with but not going out with. Her dad wants to take her and her school counselor (his girlfriend) up to their cabin for a summer of camping -- but that doesn't sound so appealing anymore. So instead Jamie goes to spend the summer with her mom, who is an ex-middle school teacher who became a romance writer.
Jamie's dad finds a lacrosse camp to enroll her in to give her something to do while she is there. She ends up getting a job helping run a basketball camp for underprivileged children. She loves basketball and the kids so she has a lot of fun!
You have to read the book to find out all of Jamie's romantic adventures in the city!
