For ten years, 15-year-old Walker Morgan has lived in the small and isolated town of Red Cedar, Oklahoma, where his parents have run an antique store. The three of them, as members of the Soldiers of God, have participated in weekend war games, gone to bible study, received training in wilderness survival skills, and participated in all the activities that are part of the life of their community. But something is different about Walker's family. His parents speak differently at home than with their friends, and they read a lot. And there are no photo albums, scrapbooks, or other evidence of extended family members, no mementos from a previous time. Shortly after Walker's father reveals that he is investigating the activities of the Soldiers of God for the FBI, Walker's mother is killed by members of the militia. With his mother gone and his father's fate uncertain, Walker begins the fight for his survival in rough physical and psychological terrain.

This book was very promising and interesting, at first. It's a pretty scary story, about a fifteen-year-old boy who is being hunted through the woods by an anti-government militia group. For as long as he can remember, he and his parents have belonged to this militia group; he grew up among them and learned to shoot and hide and play war games, in preparation for the war with the American government. But now his father has been found out--he is actually an undercover FBI agent, and the militia group is now trying to kill him and his wife and son. The son has been separated from his parents, but he saw his mother's dead body. He now has to try to make himself safe, in the woods, surrounded by people who are fighting him.
I liked the realism of this book and the fact that the story paused several times to print a page or two of quotes from actual militia groups functioning today in our country. It's very scary, the people who are out there. However, there was a plot twist toward the end of the book that really ruined the whole story for me.

15 year old Walker Morgan has lived in the small town of Red Cedar, Oklahoma, his parents run an antique store. The three of them are members of a militia group called the Soldiers of God. Every couple of weekends they have practice war games. These games practice bible study, wil;derness skills, and make a lot of there friends come together. You can tell his parents are hiding something him from him because he can tell they speak differently with him than around other people. He finally found out that his dad was part of the FBI. That made it really hard for him because he could not tell anyone what his parents did. A couple of weeks after he found out that his parents were in the FBI his mom was shot by a man in the militia. With out his mom he had to go through physical and physiological terrain which was really hard on him. I enjoyed the book a lot, it was pretty boring towards the beginning but it got a lot more exciting towards the end. The author used a lot of detail and expressed a lot of moods through her writing. While I was reading the book it kept me in my seat the whole time, except during the beginning. After the first couple of chapters it got really interesting and I wanted to read all of the time. "Paper Trail" was a really good book I would recommend it to twelve years of age and up. I would rate it about a three and a half because of the beginning.

Are your parents who you think they are? Do you know your family history? Are your friends in your town really your friends? Do you really know if what you believe is the truth? Hold on to your sanity and read this really scary, really exciting book about a boy that's confused by the world he's always known in a small town in Oklahoma.Wow! It was a wild ride that this story took me on. I loved it! I think you will too. Read it today and see what it would be like if your world wasn't the truth.

This is the best book I have ever read...seriously. I'm not one to cry in books, but at the end of this one I was balling. The story is exciting and scary. It's fiction, but also had truth to it. The whole thing is scary because it's so real. From the moment his mother dies in front of his eye, to the last chapter (I'm not going to give anything away), it was hard to put down.It's not your ordinary book, more like a scary fairy tale. I had no clue what I was getting into when I first read it for a book report, but I'm really glad I did and I've read it twice after that. This is original, exciting, and cliffhanging. Read it.

Walker Morgan has lived in the isolated town of Red Cedar, Oklahoma for almost all his life. His parents seem normal and do all the expected contributions for their community. Of course, normal for this community consists of bible study, wilderness survival training, and weekend war games to name just a few. They are members of the Soldiers of God and this is everyday life for Walker's family -- at least in public. In private, Walker's parents behave differently. They read books for one thing, and speak and act differently then other other parents do. And why are there no scrapbooks or family photos lying around?This is an oddly interesting book. The strange community and the disturbing normalness of Walker make for an odd combination. But it is when Walker discovers the truth about his family that things start getting interesting. The basic plot is a bit too much like a movie of the week concept, but I did enjoy the the characterizations and the Ms Gilbert's writing style. And the Walker is a character that stays with you even after you put down the book.
