Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The uniqueness of this book is that it covers such important aspects of modern signal processing as block transforms from subband filter banks and wavelet transforms from a common unifying standpoint, thus demonstrating the commonality among these decomposition techniques. In addition, it covers such "hot" areas as signal compression and coding, including particular decomposition techniques and tables listing coefficients of subband and wavelet filters and other important properties.
The field of this book (Electrical Engineering/Computer Science) is currently booming, which is, of course, evident from the sales of the previous edition. Since the first edition came out there has been much development, especially as far as the applications. Thus, the second edition addresses new developments in applications-related chapters, especially in chapter 4 "Filterbrook Families: Design and Performance," which is greatly expanded.

* Unified and coherent treatment of orthogonal transforms, subbands, and wavelets
* Coverage of emerging applications of orthogonal transforms in digital communications and multimedia
* Duality between analysis and synthesis filter banks for spectral decomposition and synthesis and analysis transmultiplexer structures
* Time-frequency focus on orthogonal decomposition techniques with applications to FDMA, TDMA, and CDMA

4 out of 5 stars pages 53-84 missing   January 16, 2006

In my book pages 53-84 are missing. They are occupied by pages 17-48. Nothing's been ripped out.

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book on multiresolution transforms   May 20, 2002
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

It is the most comprehensive book on multiresolution transforms and state-of-the-art applications. It provides the theoretical depth without getting lost in the math. It leads the reader to the popular communications and multimedia applications of transforms like DCT, wavelets and filter banks. Akansu & Haddad need to be saluted for their clarity in a field where hype-let has been the fashion.

2nd Edition of the book is a "MUST" classic in multiresolution signals and transforms as a reference volume for researchers and engineering students.

4 out of 5 stars Good core book for wavelets   July 11, 2000
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

This book does a good job at providing a unified framework both for wavelets and subband filtering and decomposition, and so I would give it 5 stars were not for it only covers biorthogonal filters in the last chapter, and at the very last moment. If you need to understand how wavelets are related to filtering, signal processing and signal compression, this is your book, but it's not specific to any of this fields, and is very 1D oriented, with 2D processing only mentioned.
