Product Description
When it’s springtime in horse country, few sights stir the hearts of horse lovers more than that of mares and foals on good green pasture. It is an image filled with both the satisfaction of the moment and the promise of the future. For horse people, the foaling process is one of the most critical and satisfying aspects of ownership.

The Foaling Primer captures the foaling experience in amazing, up-close photographs taken by noted horse photographer Bob Langrish. The friendly, informative text guides the reader through the first year of a foal’s life with detailed descriptions and instructions on birth, care, handling, training, and weaning. Perfect for novice horse owners, first-time farmers, 4-H and Pony Club members, and anyone who is fascinated by horses and their lives, this introductory handbook provides everything one needs to know to be successful with a foal.

The chapters are divided along critical points in a foal’s developmental timeline: the first 24 hours, the early weeks, one to three months, four to six months, weaning time, and approaching the yearling mark. There are how-to boxes for such tasks as bottle-feeding, introducing a foal to grooming, and practicing rope leading; “to-do” lists for each stage of a foal’s development; charts of what’s normal and what’s not (with clear guidance on when to call a vet); lists of supplies and equipment needed; definitions of key words and terms; and forms to use for accurate record keeping.

The pages of this hard-working guide are sure to be dog-eared by the time a foal reaches the one-year mark, as readers will refer to it again and again for reassurance, guidance, and complete, dependable information.

5 out of 5 stars great book   June 13, 2008
Nice book to add to your library......nicely done and I'm glad I made the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars This book has GREAT information   May 20, 2008
This book covers a lot of things and has very thorough information. I bought a Morgan mare last year and had her bred; she had her first foal in May 2008. It was also my first foal as well. This book gave me a lot of valuable information on how to take care of a pregnant mare, a newborn foal, and a foal as it is growing. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who needs a good run down on how to raise a foal.

3 out of 5 stars Great info but still wanting more   November 3, 2007
I have just purchased my first Foal at 2 weeks old (mom is at the same farm) and found this book has lots of information for the first timer (not sure it would be useful if you have any experience with foals). I found it gave me some great general knowledge of working with the little guys but still left me desiring lots more info. Will keep looking for another baby book but this one was a good start.

4 out of 5 stars Good read   September 10, 2007
I am really enjoying this book. having my first foal is scarey for me and this book is making it easier.

5 out of 5 stars First foaling   July 17, 2007

As an old horsewoman attending her aged mare having her first foal, I was feeling in great need of advice and counsel. This book delivered it. We had everything in place well ahead of time, and the whole thing went like clockwork. I knew exactly when to rip the bag and when to assist with some gentle traction. I hope everyone is blessed with such a textbook delivery. But if you aren't, this primer should see you through until the vet comes.
