I am impressed with all of th Berlitz Think and Talk Series that I have seen or used. This one is no exception. Like the others, it begins simply with sounds like a dog barking that the student/listener then identifies with the spoken (and written) word. From these simple beginnings, one builds to quite impressive usage and vocabulary. Because of the lack of cognates in Japanese, the process is a bit more difficult (for me) than with German, French or Spanish. But it works. The main body of the course is done in a romanized version of Japanese, but there is a third textbook that teaches character reading and writing. All in all, a rather impressive accomplishment.
