Book Description
"I read Never from cover to cover and it kept my attention the entire book. It had me laughing and shedding tears, all at the same time. I was totally hooked and couldn't put this book down. This will no doubt be a best seller."
-Pat Miletich, five-time World Mixed Martial Arts Champion and Coach of Jens Pulver

At the age of thirty-two, Jens Pulver, world-class athlete and the Ultimate Fighting Championship's first lightweight champion in Mixed Martial Arts, has seen and experienced more than most people will in an entire lifetime. He has overcome horrendous abuse and unimaginable odds, and continues to inspire everyone who is fortunate enough to learn about his life.

Little did Jens know, when he stumbled upon a few brothers in the back room of a sweaty gym, that his life would take on new direction. Burdens would lift, friendships galvanize, and his spirit be reborn. Thoughtfully, methodically, and deliberately, he and his brothers would set out to change the world.

5 out of 5 stars The toughest men walk with the Lord   November 1, 2007

This book is about faith and what ordinary men that aren't mixed martial arts champions can do in to change the world around them. Pulver's story is more of a backdrop to the story of mutual faith in the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars from a mothers viewpoint   October 4, 2007

I love the way the author captured the subject in this rendition of the life of a child brought up in his own personnal hell. He showed all the facets, not just the polished, but the ruddy and cracked as well, and that is how it is for Jens today. There will always be residual from his upbringing, but the choices he makes to rise above are shown clearly in this book and it gave me a sense of hope that the message may reach more young men with similar situations. I've read it a few times and love it each time. I am, by the way, Jens' mother.

An inspiring story about how a talented and determined mixed martial arts fighter overcame the sort of childhood traumas that would likely turn me into an emotional trainwreck. The writing is sharply observant and pulls no punches (no pun intended). Jens' story is by turns harrowing, inspiring and compelling...I more or less read the book in one sitting.

4 out of 5 stars A champion of a story.   April 30, 2007

I really enjoy Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and I love God. So when there is a book that deals with both, it is a must read for me. If you are a fan of either one, this would be a book to put on your wish list. Jen Pulver is an amazing character, an unpolished diamond. Jens faced horrors that no one should face. The author has passion for the story he is telling about Jens, and it comes through in his writing.

The story is much more than just Jens Pulver and the personal and profession struggles he has faced. It is about a group of professional athletes competing in the infancy of a new sport. It is about men, who struggle in life. MMA fighters are symbolic. They face their battles head-on in the ring. If only life was a simple for the rest of us men. The rest of us struggle with life challenges, temptation, stress, and disappointment. This book helps bridge the gap. It helps men see that although we don't face a gloved opponent in a cage or ring, we too, face struggles. The MMA fighters outside the ring are very much like us, Having doubts and fears and issues. The lifestyle of an MMA fighter is not at all glamorous as we see through this book. I now have a great deal of empathy and admiration for the challenges they face even BEFORE they enter the ring.

The author's passion for the subject is clear and engrossing, but at times the story jumps around as to the subject matter. From Jens in several chapters, to Matt Hughes in another chapter, to their men's group in another, and back to Jens. In some ways it is stylistic of lives of the MMA fighters (contracts/injuries/losses/victories). Many questions remain on Jens. For example, what happened to his father? I wish there was more insight on Jen's fight experiences in Japan and rejoining the UFC. However, it is still a very good read and I had a hard time putting it down. Maybe many questions remain because the life of Jens Pulver (latest coach on the Ultimate Fighter TV Show) is far from over. I hope the author writes more books, maybe focusing on another fighter like Pat Miletech or Matt Hughes. I would highly recommend this book both to fans of MMA and to men who have faced a great deal of personal challenges.
