Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Bull in the Ring is a unique amalgam... part medicine, part military...part football. The story centers on a very small fraction of a busy surgeon's career. Dr. Mike McCarthy is coerced into coaching the Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital football team, while also running a large department, treating countless patients and trying to raise five small children. There's plenty of conflict, a few tears and lots of laughs. The reader is drawn into the operating room, into the huddle and into the fray. "Coach Mac", a former collegiate linebacker, is driven to turn his band of medical misfits into winners...no easy task since the hapless Navy team hasn't won a game in three years and is widely considered to be a bunch of bona fide losers. The arch enemies, the rest of the Marine teams in the base league, aren't McCarthy's only problems. There's an endless stream of real patients demanding his attention. As a practicing urologist, he sees some "beauties". There are sexpots, perverts, war heroes and scared little kids. There is even one young Marine who manages to do his own circumcision, with his trusty straight razor! These patients and their stories, provide the framework upon which Bull in the Ring is hung. Dr. McCarthy confronts it all: infection, death, bureaucracy and of course his biggest nemesis, the invincible Marines. Along the way, the human spirit is exposed with surgical precision that's the allure of this compelling true story. Will the Navy ever win a game? Does winning even matter? The reader is challenged to answer these questions and others posed by the real life characters who animate the pages of Bull in the Ring.

3 out of 5 stars Docs and jocks   May 21, 2007
Well written. As a Marine it's always good to hear what the Navy thinks about the Corps. For me the book had a tad too much medicine and not enough about coaching but it was still a good read and many of the stories were of the laugh out loud variety.

5 out of 5 stars Humor in Uniform   April 4, 2005
If you like riotous humor, then Bull In The Ring is for you.
The collection of autobiographical episodes by Navy Surgeon
Doctor Michael McCarthy will keep you laughing through each
concise and easy to follow chapter. The lessons learned by
Doctor McCarthy aboard a nuclear submarine, as coash of a football team of Navy corpsmen, and during his everyday practice
as a military physician are things every doctor who served
understands and loves to remember! I feel strongly that reading
Bull In The Ring will help the reader broaden his outlook on life, and help the reader to understand the humor of medical life
in the military.

5 out of 5 stars Humor in Uniform   March 25, 2005
To get an idea of what REALLY goes on in military medicine, read this humorous, well-written, tell-it-like-it-is story of 2 Navy Captains (both physicians) coaching a Navy Hospital football team in a Marine league. A moving admixture of heart-warming stories about TRUE military heroes, hilarious episodes and behind-the-scenes looks at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. Dr. McCarthy was cut from a different mold as is evident from his bold, entertaining literary style.

Dr. McCarthy is a great storyteller. "Bull in the Ring" is his autobiographical tale of a Navy doctor who is recruited to coach the hospital football team, a perennial doormat in a league of Marines. The book is a behind-the-scenes look at a down to earth doc who balances his life as a family man, intense football coach and compassionate physician. He throws in funny stories of military protocol and operating room pranks. You will love this book.
