A NOTE FROM JEN LANCASTER:

"To whom the fat rollsI'm tired of books where a self-loathing heroine is teased to the point where she starves herself skinny in hopes of a fabulous new life. And I hate the message that women can't possibly be happy until we all fit into our skinny jeans. I don't find these stories uplifting; they make me want to hug these women and take them out for fizzy champagne drinks and cheesecake and explain to them that until they figure out their insides, their outsides don't matter. Unfortunately, being overweight isn't simply a societal issue that can be fixed with a dose healthy of positive self-esteem. Its a health matter, and here on the eve of my fortieth year, I've learned I have to make changes so I don't, you know, die. Because what good if finally being able to afford a pedicure if I lose a foot to adult onset diabetes?"

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this Diva   July 24, 2008
Jen Lancaster began telling this story in such a humourous way. I was crying by the end of the first chapter. This lasted for approximately the first half of the book. I don't know what happened to the Jen Lancaster who began the first half, but the second half sounded as if it was written by someone "trying" to be funny. As Jen goes about losing weight, beginning to make progress, she turns into an angry she-wolf who is downright mean in her descriptive assessments of characters. To make fun of people with disabilities and skin imperfections is not what I deem to be funny.

This book had so much potential in the beginning. Did she lose her editor and get stuck with someone new? Whatever the circumstances I will not spend one penny purchasing another of her books. I will not be a part of enriching the lifestyle of a woman who looks down on those who cannot help the way they look nor the hand life has dealt them.

It would appear that with every pound of flesh she lost she lost the ability to be funny. While her ego appears to inflate as the story progresses, her talent for making me laugh diminishes.

And why oh why did you get such a "potty mouth" during the second half of the book. It did more damage than good...adding wasted words to fill in those blank pages and empty thoughts.

While I cheer for this lady for her success in losing weight I long for the Jen Lancaster who appeared at the first half of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Such a Pretty Fat is Hilarious + Fun   July 20, 2008
In the book Jen Lancaster writes about her experience dieting and working out with a trainer... (this is oh so famililar huh) I had to put the book down because I found myself laughing hysterically out loud at the coffee shop and people were staring at me. I can't wait to pass it on to my sister.

4 out of 5 stars spoke to me for sure   July 17, 2008
it was a great, fast read. I enjoyed it thoroughly and think that anyone who's struggled with weight and has a sense of humor about it.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!   July 15, 2008
I loved this book. It is hilarious and I felt like I was reading a book about my life. Having just turned 40 and being an overweight, ex-sorority girl myself, I could totally relate to Jen's dieting struggles and so many other issues. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed Bitter and Bright Lights but this was even more entertaining! Fabulous beach read - cannot say enough about it - buy this book!

2 out of 5 stars loved her other books   July 14, 2008
I was disappointed. I really REALLY like her other books but this one just didn't do it for me. If you find this one just a little funny defiantly read her others they are great.
