Amazon.com Review Armed with his blanket (Mooey), his toy rabbit (Mop), a stool, and various odds and ends he picks up along the way, elephant toddler Humphrey sets out to find a perfect place in his house to play. He tries the bathroom, his mother's room, and a closet, but nothing is quite right. Finally, stranded in his mother's high heels on the stairs with his box precariously perched on the step above him, and Mop toppled down below, tired little Humphrey has worn himself out. Just in time, Mummy, who has been seen as a quiet background presence throughout, folding laundry and puttering in the bathroom, shows up to save the day. Comfortably and comfortingly, she scoops up her boy under one arm and his toys under the other, and finds him the best spot of all: a cozy hideout in the kitchen behind the drying rack, close to jelly sandwiches, and, most importantly, to Mummy. Sally Hunter's endearing elephant is guaranteed to win the hearts of every reader. There's nothing like the tottering yet purposeful play of a toddler; Hunter's sketchy watercolor and pencil drawings capture the scene perfectly. Many of the details are told in pictures only, as when Humphrey decides that the problem with the bathroom for a play area is that the floor is too sticky--we see that Humphrey himself has pulled down the jars with "pretty colors" from the ledge, as well as made "sploshy sounds" in the toilet by tossing in bath oils. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter

My 7 year old still loves Humphrey June 30, 2008 WoW! I bought this book for my 5th child because I was looking for something sweet and sentimental that would appeal to a little boy. He loved and still loves this story, many years later. He loved reading this one over and over and it was one book that I never tired of, either. It required snuggling up and I felt soothed by the beautiful colors and sentimental story. My little boy (now 7) will still have me read this one to him if the older kids aren't watching! I'm saving it for my grand-kids. It's just a wonderul book that reinforces all the special things about being a family.
We love HUMPHREY!!!!! February 16, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found a Humphrey's Corner baby book while I was pregnant with my son and decided that this had to be the theme for my sons nursery, and then while looking for the stuff for his nursery, found the books and fell even deeper in love with Humphrey, these stories are good wholesome, innocent and fun stories, I like reading them to my son, and he likes hearing them. I too, got him the stuffed Humphrey, and baby Jack. I wish there were more stars, cause I would give a ton more.
Good, but not my favorite Humphrey book January 12, 2005 I love the Humphrey book series, but I have to say, this one is not the best. Of course, it's beautifully illustrated, and is still a lovely book. But the story just doesn't hold my toddler's attention like the other Humphrey books do. It's a bit too detailed and long-winded, and the story doesn't go anywhere. I recommend "Humphrey's Birthday" or "Humphrey's Bedtime" instead.
Such a beautiful book! March 6, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I first purchased this book because the illustrations were amazing. Then I read the story and I LOVED it. Immediately I went out and bought Humphrey's Bedtime and Humphrey's Family. I'm now recommending and giving them as a gift- with a snuggly stuffed Humphrey. I recommend this book to everyone!
ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE June 25, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is absolutely adorable. The illustrations are charming, the font is perfect, and the story is very sweet. It follows Humphrey, a little elephant, as he collects his favorite things looking for the perfect place to play. It is a wonderful gift from a mother to a child (the ending will melt every mother's heart!) I gave it to my daughter as a first birthday present, and she won't enjoy the story for a year or two yet (too many words to a page for a 1 year old) but I had to have it for her. There is also a stuffed Humphrey available that I bought her at FAO Schwarz.
