Product Description
A guide for families and outdoor adventurers alike, Maui Trailblazer 2009 covers all of the island, and includes day trips to the neighboring islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Molokini.

Clear directions and concise descriptions lead to all of Maui's well-known attractions, as well as to hidden discoveries that Trailblazer readers have come to expect.

137 different hikes and strolls to tropical rain forests and remote valleys, coastal bluffs and lava caves, Haleakala crater and the Hana Highway, cascading waterfalls, beaches, ridgetops, towns, whale-watching perches, historic sites, and archeological ruins.

Among the 44 snorkeling spots are hike-to coves and the secret places that tour boats go.

Kayakers can pick from about 20 put-ins.

Surfers can select from 38 beaches and decide whether to boogie, board, or body surf. Onlookers will find the best places to watch the surfers, windsurfers and kite-boarders ride the big ones.

The text is complimented by 10 maps and 240 photographs. Driving tours-nine of them-take readers to all the attractions, natural wonders, and historic sites.

A Resource Links section provides numbers for free visitor information and recreational outfitters, as well as hand-picked accommodations and local restaurants to suit every budget and taste bud.

A Best Of section lets you pick the right activity to suit your mood and the day. Appendices include free hula shows, farmer's markets, what to pack, climate, history, fauna, and a Hawaiian glossary.

This new and completely revised third edition for 2009 includes a Trailblazer Kids section for adventuring families.

5 out of 5 stars Fun on Maui   September 1, 2010

Spunky and alive with untouristy places to go. We stuck with MT for two weeks. And we never ran out of scenery even though the island is small. Both of us pulled out things we wanted to do before even leaving; we are planning nuts.

This guide uses the mile markers on the highway as navigational tools and their maps have all the stops numbered. It's geared for drivers not knowing the terrain and we always knew what was up ahead so pulling off and parking was no big deal.

Leaving early for all our outings was key and we found ourselves ahead of the crowds on the Hana Highway which we drove twice. We did the same for our hike in the Haleakala Crater and glad we did because there was no shade. I'd say the pictures complete the book. Also we are divers, so the book did double duty directing us to the good spots along the Makena Coast. What's really cool, if you're on a budget like we were, so much of what they list is free.

This book has some excellent info in it, but has one glaring weakness, in my opinion: It needs more maps!! There are great trail details, but essentially no detailed maps. For me this was a problem. I need maps to find places. I used this book in conjunction with Maui Revealed, which makes a nice combination. I will say that I used Maui Revealed much more because of its many excellent detailed maps.

I'm going to Maui for the first time and this book lists walks and snorkel sites that I am going to check out when I am there. It will be a great reference to have with me.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guide to Maui   February 16, 2010

This is a guide book to be used, not thumbed through for its pretty pictures. It contains all the information you could want from location of farmers' markets to location of obscure trailheads and beaches in all parts of the island. Highly recommended.

It was fantastic traveling around Maui with this guide in the car. Very user friendly. Directions accurate and clear. Best piece of baggage we brought along for our week there.
