Going Old School With the Bunch Attack June 19, 2008 Coach Leo Hand has written an incredibly useful under-center offensive football text in "101 Aceback Bunch Plays." He takes note of the shortcomings of many modern one-back football offenses, specifically the lack of variety and deception in the running game.
Coach Hand's solution is to go old school, but in a modern and systematic way. He takes concepts from many of the most successful offensive systems over the years, and packages them together in intelligently designed play series using aceback formations. The result is an end to grab-bag play calling, as the core play in each series sets up counters and play action.
Coaching then becomes as easy as spotting how the defense is adjusting to stop your core play, and deciding which complementary play in that series is the best way to attack the defensive adjustments. This leads to play-calling with a purpose, and ultimately to success.
This book is also a perfect complement to the Andrew Coverdale/Dan Robinson Bunch passing classic, The Bunch Attack: Using Compressed Formations in the Passing Game (Art & Science of Coaching). Between them, the Coverdale/Robinson and Hand books allow you to design an offense that totally maximizes the talents of your players, without bulking up your playbook with useless clutter and random plays that don't belong in a well-designed offense.
Highly recommended.
