AVCA Coaching volleyball December 14, 2007 I have been coaching volleyball for over 20 years and still consider this one of, if not THE, best comprehensive text for volleyball coaches - beginner and experienced alike.
...and I purchased it for less than I could have with my AVCA membership.
great book March 20, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
solid book on many aspects of coaching. Highly recommend
Detailed instruction September 13, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Asher's approach of employing experts in each chapter to discuss their respective forte yields a thorough and insightful text. I have upwards of 12 coaching books and this one I think to be the most valuable.
Great book for reference July 14, 2000 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
This book is a revamped version of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Handbook. Like the title of the review suggests, it is a great reference. I find myself going to it a lot in order to refresh my memory about some technical aspects of the game.
If you wanted just one book to help you with your coaching or with your own game. This is probably the book for you. If you have a deep burning desire to delve into other aspects of coaching and the game of volleyball, this is a great way station. One of the many books that you need to keep in your library, but a very dog eared book due to the many times you will need to look into the book.
Like the previous reviewer said, an excellent book for beginning to intermediate players and coaches.
Comprehensive May 16, 2000 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
The book's material is useful for the beginning and intermediate volleyball coach. I have been feeling my way in coaching my team in small tournaments for some years now, but reading this book makes me feel like I've gone to a volleyball coaching clinic.I especially like the way the book emphasizes the development of each of the skills and positions in a team. Also, therapy of the common injuries included at the end are a great plus. On the whole it has a very well-rounded treatment of coaching, including not only the physical, but also psychological, medical and nutritional elements that have to be considered by a good volleyball coach. The book is overflowing with actual coaching experience of a number of people. I learned a lot from it.
