Product Description
Aimed at parents and coaches of organized sports, this easygoing and friendly discussion of unrealistic performance pressure avoids medical jargon and outlines both physical and emotional milestones that determine sports skill development in youth. Revealing that body chemistry, thinking skills, and emotional maturity all play important roles in athletic training, this guide introduces differing developmental timetables, emphasizing that a focus on personal accomplishments is a much more effective practice than a focus on simply winning. Clever chapter titles proceed from "First Serve" and "Free Throw" to "9th Inning" and "Final Lap and Cool Down," with each chapter providing a questionnaire that gauges a child's readiness for the skill levels discussed.

Sport Success Rx! April 9, 2008 Dr. Stricker is ultimately qualified to help you make decisions regarding sports training and participation and setting appropriate parameters for your children.
Healthy outlook November 9, 2007 This is a great book about keeping youth sports in perspective. Dr. Stricker does an excellent job of explaining the physical and mental stages a child goes through from toddler to the teen years. If little Johnny can't hit the ball when he is four, this book helps explain why he has trouble at that age. If you have children in athletics or are a coach of children, then I would highly recommend reading this book.It will give you a reality check. Hopefully, this book will make you and your child enjoy his/her sports activities more.
Great read, easy and extremely informative! May 21, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an incredible treasure for the parents and coaches of young athletes. It is very well written, easy to understand and thoughtful. Dr. Stricker's knowledge on the subject of physical and emotions developmental levels of children and the impact this has on sports is supurb. Being a parent of athletes himself give a uniques perspective to the book. Do you know any parents who push their kids to perform in sports way past the "fun zone"? This book is for them, but it's also for those of us who are trying to make sense of the increased commitments that are pressed upon our youth involved in most sports today.
A Must Read ! January 12, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is great! A must read for coaches, especially of very young athletes. As a parent, I gained alot of knowledge and felt this book was a reputable source of information. This book explains so much about what kids can actually do, compared to what is expected of them. The nutrition information is very helpful and I learned alot there as well.
