Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When 2,500 men and women (and children these days!) take to the Appalachian Trail to attempt to hike all its 2,173 miles in a single journey, they need first-hand information on what's in each town, the basics (beyond guidebook stuff) of what's on the trail and where, and scores of other facts to support their adventure of a lifetime. The Companion gives them that without numbing excessive detail or personal opinion. Adventure-oriented, it's compiled by a score of volunteers who have thru-hiked the A.T. at least once, edited by leaders of their organization, and published by the private nonprofit that coordinates the volunteers who maintain and manage the trail...and know each changing inch like they know their backyards. This tenth edition includes town maps, a new glossary of "thru-hiker lingo," illustrations of significant wildlife, post-office lists, and toll-free numbers for equipment suppliers. Spiral-bound for easy use on the trail; envelope width for easy slipping into a pack pocket.
