| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description Between these covers is the essence of centuries of seafaring experience, distilled into a concise, alphabetically organized reference for sailors and powerboaters. You'll find rules of thumb for hull thickness, bottom paint coverage, estimating distances, when to hoist and lower flags, predicting weather, which colors are unlucky, rope size and strength, anchoring rights, making a rum punch, and a lot more. This is either the most useful boating book ever designed to entertain or the most entertaining book ever designed to be useful. Open it to any page and browse awhile. You'll see.

Need to Know July 4, 2008 This is a well written book with short,to the point bits of information. Think of it as a "Swiss Army" type of book, chock full of the informative 'bits' of info that distinguish a mariner form the landllubber. It's a quick study and easy to read and a great source to keep on hand. The short summerized "Rules" with the "whys" are easy to learn and remember. They'll pop into your head when you need them. I'd like to give this to all of my clients. (I'm a yacht broker)to keep them smarter and safer. This book should be on every boatowners vessel next to the "Rules".
Good reference for new/novice boater January 3, 2008 I am fairly new to boating and found this dictionary style book to be a good reference. All terms provide a true definition as well as some useful history. Worth the read.
Great book to keep by the head! June 8, 2007 This is a great book for new sailors and old.... Keep it by the head and you will enrich you sailing and "sitting" experience (or "s_itting " experience, ha, ha)...Full of great items from the highly technical to the ethereal--all concerning our common lust for the sea! Great gift for the sailor who has nothing or everything! It has a wealth of usefull information.

Great book. Interesting and very funy. When you sail for a while you notice that things like the "black Box" described in the book are true. Very good advises...good companion if you planning bluewater sailing.
For the Novice Boater April 12, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This reference guide is perfect for the novice boater just learning the ropes. It's organized alphabetically to make finding topics easy.
