Jack rocks even as a kid. November 19, 2008 I held off getting this book but being a Repairman Jack BIG TIME FAN I finally broke down and bought it. Glad I did. You can see the beginning right down to the woman with the dog. I very much enjoyed this read and will continue to pick up any of the "young jack" books. I've enjoyed all the Repairman Jack books - great read - great stories. F. Paul Wilson is tied for first place with John Connolly and his Charlie Parker novels. Both great writers who weave fantastic stories.
A younger version of Jack September 29, 2008 Secret Histories is about what I would expect from F. Paul Wilson and make no mistake, I am a big fan. I loved getting the back story on some of Jack's idiosyncracies and the development of his finely-tuned sense of justice. Jack is a fiercely moral character even as a teen and it was interesting that he is here paired up with another young person who has possibly more of a sense of adventure and curiosity than him.
The author has indulged himself with brand names, musical and popular culture references of the time, which is fine, as long as we get our questions about where Jack came from answered as well. I think that Wilson's very entertaining but deliberately spare writing style will work for younger readers. If they are anything like me at that age, they will quickly migrate toward the adult Repairman Jack and all of FPW's other wonderful opus. I can't wait for the next installment but hate to get too close to people in Jack's life. And I can't help wondering - didn't Jack have a surname when he was younger?
Repairman Jack's Beginnings... September 9, 2008 I found this book to be kind of sweet. Repairman Jack was a nice kid who always tried to do the right thing because it was the right thing to do. I could relate to pedaling bikes with friends, even pretty young girls with a lot of smarts. But what was best of all, it helps us to understand what made Repairman Jack the standup guy that he is. Kudos to F. Paul Wilson for giving us this insight into revenge fiction's greatest character.
A Two Pronged Review of a Great Book August 16, 2008 1st--for young adult readers looking for good books: Let me tell you if you like creepiness (the kind that sneaks up on you from a seemingly "normal" story) and if you like mysteries and page-turners about regular people like you...here's a book made just for you. It's set in 1983 (so you might get some insight into what it was like when your parents were growing up) Jack is just "Jack." He and his friends find a body in a desolate area near their small New Jersey town. But that's not all they find. Buried with the body is a box made of a mysterious material that only opens for Jack. Louise (Weezy) Jack's friend is really into "secret" histories, the things about the history of the world they don't teach you in school--Atlantis, Knights Templar, Aliens, Bigfoot--and she knows she's just found a piece of secret history. Strange things are afoot in their small town, though. Other people are dying, and everything seems to be related to Jack and Weezy's find. Jack is a great character, he doesn't like bullies or unfairness...and he seems to have a knack for FIXING situations. Very cool, you'll want the next in the trilogy as soon as you're done!
2nd--for Repairman Jack's adult fans: How cool is this? Backstory on Jack. Don't let the "YA" label turn you away. In 1983, Jack's Mom is alive. You get to meet a young Kate & Tom. The old ladies with dog are present...as are others from adventures in Jack's "future." In this book you get to watch Jack develop his taste for fixing. It stands to reason that Jack would be a pretty solitary kid who's very resourceful and creative. Everything you love about the adult series is here (well, except Gia and Vickie and Abe). This is well worth your time. Check it out!
Jack Secret Histories by F. Paul Wilson August 15, 2008 If you're a fan of Repairman Jack, or F. Paul wilson then you'll like this one too. A great read.
