5 out of 5 stars Good Book.   June 25, 2008
I loved this book. I read it in two days. I could not put it down. I liked how it was about baseball.

5 out of 5 stars JiTTeRbOx895's Review! ~ The Boyfriend League   June 10, 2008
So, basically... I picked up this book in the bookstore not knowing what to expect. I mean, I love some good reads that throw in some romance, but this cover looked so cheesy, I was ready to throw it down and run away screaming! But instead, I changed my mind and read the back. Which didn't help. I decided to wing it and read it anyway. Boy, was I surprised!
I play softball and that fact that the whole story revolves around baseball really thrilled me. We start off the book being introduced to a girl named Danielle who's reffered to as Dani. Dani is one of the biggest tomboys in Ragland, Texas, along with her friend Bird that is. And all these two young, high school girls want from their summers are boyfriends. When Dani spots an article in the local newspaper asking for families to supply homes for baseball players for a season, her and Bird are the first to gladly lend a helping hand. That is, under alterior motives. Her plan is to get the baseball player to help her get a boyfriend, by introducing her to the rest of the team.
Dani's family gladly excepts a player into their home, and that's where things get complicated. The guy is hott! Jason is the pitcher for the Ragland Rattlers baseball team and Dani never expected him to be the hottest one there. (Although, the other players aren't too far behind!) So this story tells of the difficult time Dani's having as she soon discovers her liking for Jason. Although the pretty one in the family is Tiffany, Dani's older sister, Jason seems to be seeking out Dani to favorite. The whole story is a fun easy read! From friendship, to love, to just plain out embarrassing moments! The book was rated five stars for a reason people! So I would definitely read it, even though the cover and title throw you off. The worst that will happen is you don't like it (yea, right!) and you can just put it down. I hope this review helped and that I didn't give too much away! =]

4 out of 5 stars Fun Teen Romance Read   February 1, 2008
Dani, eager for a boyfriend, convinces her family to house a player on her town's summer collegiate baseball team. Dani just wants her new house mate to introduce her to the other hot guys on the team, but instead she falls for him: the sweet guy sleeping down the hall who's really hot himself! This is a cute story, and I had a lot of fun reading it. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars a delightful sweet and light romantic comedy   January 25, 2008

Dani loves baseball with a passion. Quite possibly the only thing she likes more is boys and this summer she has the opportunity to combine the two for a few months of extra excitement. When the Ragland Rattlers Collegiate Baseball team posts in the local paper that they need host families for the players, Dani and her best friend Bird start scheming. If they can convince their parents to be host families to some of the players, they'd have an "in" with the team and a way to meet lots of cute boys, and find themselves a summer boyfriend in the process.

Dani and Bird are immediately caught up in the excitement of being surrounded by so many hot guys and Bird quickly finds a boyfriend in Brandon. While Dani is interested in, and starts dating, Mac, she can't help but feel he only likes her because he sees her as a look-alike to her pretty beauty pageant and Miss Ragland sister Tiffany. Then Dani begins to realize the only member of the team who makes her feel that spark is the one hottie who is off limits, her family's hosted player, Jason. What's a girl to do when she's so close to having her summer boyfriend wishes come true?

I've not read anything by Rachel Hawthorne before under this name so when my book club picked The Boyfriend League for our monthly read, I was not quite sure what to expect. I knew it was a young adult romance and that it would have some humor, but that was all I knew. I was pleased to find between the covers a delightful sweet and light romantic comedy.

Dani is a joy to spend summer with as she goes through the normal trials and tribulations that come with being an awkward teen trying to make a good impression and the cute guy. Mishap should be her middle name with all she experiences, though her loyalty to the team and her beloved sport never wavers. From being beaned in the face with a foul ball and passing out, to jinxing the team by not understanding their superstitions, she has as much trouble as she does fun attracting a summer love.

The entire cast of characters is fun to meet. Tiffany the beauty princess seems so shallow initially, but as Dani learns more about her sister, she realizes there is a lot brewing beneath the pretty face, and Dani is quite surprised at what she learns. Bird is the perfect Laurel to Dani's Hardy as these two get into one great caper after the next. Then there are Dani's parents, the kind-hearted mother who never cooks if she can help it to the sports loving Dad who lavishes attention on Dani and loves spending time playing catch in the back yard. Then of course... there are the guys. Shy quiet Jason who is attracted to Dani but tries to hide it, flirty Mac who likes kissing Dani but not doing much else with her, to Brandon who is wrapped around Bird's finger from the get-go.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip Ragland Texas in The Boyfriend League. It brought back memories of all my own teenaged summer years when the most important things in the world were having fun and finding the perfect boyfriend.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, fun read   January 8, 2008

I read another of Hawthorne's books, Snowed In, and thought it was sub-standard for her. This one is right back up where I wanted the other to be. Sure, it's still fluffy rom com, and it's not going to be winning a Pulitzer or anything, but a lot of fun from start to finish. Really strong and well developed characters. I found myself getting sucked into the story and being genuinely concerned about how the characters were going to resolve their problems. Made me laugh more than once, and even surprised me a few times as well, which is pretty rare for this genre of books. Recommended.
